Mira's End, a fantastic military sci-fi!
Revisado: 07-02-23
Mira's End, what a fantastic military sci-fi standalone. Checked all the boxes for me, as I am drawn to character-driven stories that lean into close experience of the main character(s). Great balance of action, emotion, and tech and the pacing is stellar. There were times when I was consumed in Adriene's experiences, right there in the thick of the action and/or trauma at play - Dewes balances the internal and external so well. I very much enjoyed the way human, AI, and. mil tech blended in this. More than anything the reflections on, experiences of, and themes circulating around dying and death were very compelling to me. If there is where military sci-fi is heading count... me... in.

Really interesting dark science fantasy
Revisado: 05-28-22
Really interesting science fantasy with a grimdark style foundation - strong grounding in Norse elements but connected to a galactic scale and empire, mixing magic, fascinating science, and political issues around occupation/colonization in very interesting ways. So refreshing to read a fantasy with science fiction elements that felt tangible and almost gritty. Enjoyed the weight on character experience as well. Looking forward to the next in the series, will definitely continue the series.

Beautifully written epic fantasy!
Revisado: 05-01-22
Fortune's Fool is a beautifully written book. Noble literary style casts the story in elegant description, metaphor, and analogy. Boord balances world-building between the grand and the particular just how I like it - vast and sweeping passages alongside carefully detailed minutiae. An epic fantasy with a romantic thread that takes you on a journey through emotional, political, militaristic, and social struggles, triumphs, and defeats. Do you want twists? It's got them. Big books need to carry you steadily along and hold you gripped, Fortune's Fool never faltered with me - Kyrra's story is told in dual timelines (which I love) and serves the plot and pacing well while remaining reflective, tragic, and adding weight to her quest driven by vengeance. One of the best books I've read in the epic fantasy genre in the last few years!

Fantastic conclusion to a great series
Revisado: 08-13-21
COLONYSIDE is a fantastic conclusion to a great series. Mammay mixes military scifi and thriller so well. The strong and unique first-person voice of Col. Butler is such a standout for the subgenre - sarcastic, razor-sharp, at times tragic, and also deeply cunning and strategic – getting that internal experience of the main character brings so much to this story. The rhetorical and psychological battles that Butler engages in when dealing with various characters is just as intriguing and potent as the actual physical combat in the novel, not to mention the twists and surprises especially as the book nears the end. Great settings both in terms of the planet and its habitation facilities, as well as the flora, etc. I’m a huge fan of the PLANETSIDE series and this conclusion did a great job of linking to the previous two books. I’m really looking forward to his next novel, THE MISFIT SOLDIER.

Action, Aliens, and Exploration scifi adventure!
Revisado: 03-27-21
Excellent classic sci-fi story full of action, adventure, planetary exploration, and alien contact, with bits of mystery and even a bit of light horror to boot. The world building and story shine bright for me in this book. I found the author’s inventiveness and attention to details in describing all the nuances and gadgets, biological aspects, etc. of the planets and space tech/travel to be so entertaining. It really sucked me into the world of the story. The plot is very classic sci-fi – straight-up, with no-nonsense characters that give it a very relatable quality. And it is an epic scale journey! I found it to be very cinematic and was pulled into the narrative, which speaks about our expansion into the stars and how we deal with surviving what we encounter, whether it be environment or alien species. Looking forward to #2!
