I love authors reading their own work and this potent memoir in the author's own reading is the very best of this precious genre. Nguyen pulls no punches and exposes himself over and over again, like only a true writer can. I share no identities with him other than American of the 1970s generation and yet I learned so much from him. This is a true gem, not to be missed.

My only regret/irritance is that Audible bleeped out the name he gave Donald Trump, and that annoys me. Why not have the option of un-edited or PG version, Audible?

I love it when authors read their own work well and this is an extraordinary example of that. Plus it offers many gems of wisdom that I appreciate - my favorite being that living for the future instead of in the present is arrogance. I'm a historian of medicine so I really get that. I will be looking for more from this author. I'm not even Christian but I wasn't at all triggered or excluded by her very Christian memoir.

I have very high standards for narrators and I don't love this one, but it's been very useful for me to be able to listen to this book while driving, cooking, etc. And the book is extraordinarily useful for those of us described by its title.

I love historical fiction, and I think this work has many strengths. My favorite genre of audiobook is when the author reads their own work, and Choo is a fabulous narrator. All that said, I think this book should have been trimmed down. I'm about 3/4 of the way through and I think I'll do the unthinkable for me and just lay it aside. The main character's obsessions are wearying, and her emotional volatility is too much. I like the parallel story of the calm detective Bao, but I think in the part with the Fox Woman Choo tried too hard to maintain constant tension and energy, and I find myself as a reader needing a break. I should note that friends love this book, and I'm a difficult critic because I'm a writer myself, so I always ask a lot of my reading. I'm going to listen to Choo's other novels and give her another chance. She has lovely details and character development that I hope I'll be able to delight in more in another story.

I too feel lonely with a particular kind of grief that few people can understand. I appreciate this show very much and want to thank its creator Michael as well as Audible for including it for free in my premium membership.

I think this book will make an extraordinary difference for my family. I am profoundly grateful to you Heidi, and to Theo, for bravely sharing your own story. And I now have a sense of just how deeply my ableism runs. That alone is an invaluable lesson but I also learned the extremely important difference between the medical model and the social model of neuro divergence, and that again is a game changer for me. I can't thank you enough!!

This is the second time in a matter of weeks that Audible has popped just what I needed to hear on my home page, and free! I saw myself in Little Pa and ached for him and for his mother. The story is languid and attentive. The ending confused me somewhat but I very much enjoyed this story.

Talk about signs! Audible popped this onto my front page of the app just when I needed it. I didn't even know about Mel Robbins and I am so deeply grateful for her wisdom and knowledge! This is the best gift ever.

Stunning work of historical fiction

Revisado: 03-08-23

This book is a masterpiece. My father-in-law who has a PhD in US history and is a voracious reader recommended it to me as one of the best books he's ever read, and I (also a PhD in history and a university professor of history) think this is one of the best historical fictions I've ever read. Having read some of the books that Brooks consulted in her research for this novel, I could hear the historians' scholarship in her work, but this did not bother me at all. On the contrary, it gave me more confidence in her fictionalized portrayals of real historical figures, including the ones that she had to manufacture from several sources and a paucity of sources (specifically in the lives of enslaved people). It is also a work that speaks directly to our current times of battling against anti-Black racism in the US.
One note: narrators are uneven. Michael Obiora is great for Theo (with a British accent), but his American accents are horrendous. Katherine Littrell is fantastic as Jess, and James Fouhey is superb (for Jarrett), but I didn't care for Lisa Flanagan's narration. Her parts are relatively small so it didn't affect my enjoyment of the book. I should note that I am *very* picky about voice actors.

I appreciate Williams' work so much and feel so grateful to have been able to listen to this book among the free titles in Audible premium. I suppose it's among the free titles because of the numerous annoying patches in the production, but Robin Miles is still a superb narrator and the book is so important. That's why I still give it five full stars - the faults were in production alone. I listened straight through despite the sad content. As a White American who cares about racial justice this type of scholarship is essential. Thank you Dr. Williams!
