Historia
In the late 1960s, in the town of Bonn, capital of West Germany, a British Embassy officer by the name of Leo Harting goes missing—and forty-three confidential-or-higher files with him. Dispatched from the British Foreign Office to investigate, Alan Turner arrives in Bonn to find riots, protests, and a tenuous balance of power. As if there isn’t enough pressure, the embassy’s head of Chancery, Rawley Bradfield, makes it clear he has no intentions of making Turner’s investigation an easy one.

Worst narrator ever
Revisado: 11-07-24
Narrator yelling & speeding. And intoning as if he thought listener could not perceive the natural inflection built in to the author's beautiful language, and as if everything needed one or more exclamation points. Often near unlistenable. Awful.

Historia
With the Cold War at a fever pitch, though, a potential assignment is only ever one defector-turned-informant away. Alerted to the possibility of missile activity from the Soviets on the West German border, the long stagnant Department leaps at the chance to restore some of their cache in the intelligence community. Director Leclerc hunts down former field agent Fred Leiser and sends him beyond the wall to East Germany—tying the Department's fate to his.

Shoddy
Revisado: 10-28-24
The problem is not that it's too negative about spying, or not entertaining; it's that its badly written - phoned in, unbelievable. It's hard to believe that Le Carre wrote it - all of his talents rendered mediocre or worse. Not even AI is capable of something this poorly imagined.
I love his work as a whole; this one was a surprising disappointment

Historia
Unexplained events are happening at Oxford these days. Several students have been attacked at night by some strange form of wild animal. It can scale walls with cat-like agility. Its arms are as thin and as strong as steel bands. And there is one student who conducts midnight studies in his room with certain Egyptian artifacts. The most significant of which is a 6'7" tall mummy.

Excellent, elegant, but ..
Revisado: 12-11-22
A bit too restrained. Hardly frightening. It's difficult to care about cardboard Public School twits. But entertaining.

Roger Ackroyd knew too much. He knew that the woman he loved had poisoned her brutal first husband. He suspected, also, that someone had been blackmailing her. Then, tragically, came the news that she had taken her own life with a drug overdose. But the evening post brought Roger one last fatal scrap of information. Unfortunately, before he could finish reading the letter, he was stabbed to death.

Near Perfect
Revisado: 09-10-21
Structured to be easy for the writer to decode, Less so for the reader. Either the unintentional result of imperfect empathy - near universal; or a tiny spec of bad faith. The former I guess. Entertaining and engrossing after all.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Narrator excellent
Revisado: 01-14-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. The narration is excellent in every respect, which is a considerable achievement given the novel. Neville Jason renders the very long sentences comprehensible, does different characters without overdoing the distinctions, and transmits the writing beautifully, which can only be so if he understood himself - again no mean feat
What did you like best about this story?
There's no need to review Proust.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No one has read this work in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
I have much less difficulty in reading this work via audiobook than by sight.
