Historia
Crystal methamphetamine is widely considered to be the most dangerous drug in the world, and nowhere is that more true than in the small towns of the American heartland. Methland tells the story of Oelwein, Iowa (pop. 6,159), which, like thousands of other small towns across the country, has been left in the dust by the consolidation of the agricultural industry, a depressed local economy, and an out-migration of people.

Interesting Story - Can't feel sorry for them
Revisado: 05-05-11
Not sure the author wants you to feel sorry for those in the book but there is an attempt to portray those affected by meth as victims. I am a compassionate person but ultimately human beings make choices and there are consequinces for those choices. The real vicitims are those trying to make an honest liviing amonst the meth problem and suffer as their small towns die in support of the drug buisness.
I was particularly interested in the part where govenement regulation actually promoted the meth industry. This book is well written and the narration is pretty good. I recommend it as a good overview to the entire meth problem.

Listening is just as good as the read
Revisado: 05-05-11
I have this book at home but really missed Jon Stewart while I was overseas. So I downloaded this book and was very glad I did. He and the rest of the Daily Show case narrarate it. Even though you cannot see all the funny pics and charts the book contains, Stewarts familiar vocal manerisms more than make up for it. I imagine this audiobook will be good by iteself, but you get another experience with the hardback. Buy them both.
Jon Stewart for President!!

Historia
Paul Kagame grew up as a wretched refugee. He and a group of comrades, determined to force their way back home after a generation of exile, designed one of the most audacious covert operations in the history of clandestine war. Then, after taking power, they amazed the world by stabilizing and reviving their devastated country.

Best Most Comprehensive Work on Rwanda
Revisado: 07-30-10
I prepared for a trip to Rwanda for the govt by reading anything I could get my hands on. This book did the best job I in describing the history and current situation in Rwanda. It does an adequate job describing the 1994 genocide and about one-fifth is on this topic. If this is your interest look at other books.
The author interviewed current President Kagame and seems to be slanted in support of the man. Yet, as I sit in Kigali in preparations for the 2010 election, it is clear Kagame has had a dramitic impact on Rwanda since the 1980s. It is not clear whether the man is more Hitler or Mandela but he seems to be the best shot of a successful leader in Africa. The author is honest about some of the critisism leveled against Kagame for heavy-handedness and gives him a pass due to the tensions still remaining in the country. I was impressed when the author described a "genocide advantage" in how Kagame and the PDR party shoud be allow latitude because of the need to rid the country of the Tutsi/Hutu division.
I could not recommend this book more. It is well written and well narrorated.

Over the course of this gripping narrative, Dave Cullen approaches his subjects with unrivaled care and insight. What emerges are shattering portraits of the killers, the victims, and the community that suffered one of the greatest - and most socially and historically important - shooting tragedies of the 20th century.

Clearly the honest look at this tragedy to date
Revisado: 08-23-09
It you think you know what happened that day in Colorado because you saw it on TV or read about it in TIME, you need to prepare youself for a much different story here. Cullen does an excellent job profiling the two shooters, one a half-crazed psychopath, the other his lost self-hating follower. Most of the stories that came out immediately after the shooting are proven wrong. Cullen also spends time on the aftermath detailing the conflicts with law enforcment, the NRA, and surviving families. It is just a fantastic book that honestly tells this very difficult story.

Very Entertaining, Informative, Engrossing
Revisado: 06-30-09
This book really made me want to go run. There is just enough clevery dialogue to keep the story alive and relevant but also a good deal of science to validate some interesting ideas as to why man evolved the way he did.
If you enjoy running even a little bit, this is really a great book. I highly recommend it.

Great stories and passion but I could not get past the sleepiness of his presentation. He never captured my attention. Listen to the sample before you download. If you can tolerate 8 hours of that - be my guest. Perhaps I should try harder and this is my fault but I am going to look for another book to try again.

Revisado: 03-28-08
This program is exactly what I have been looking for!
I have always preferred to avoid difficult people and often find myself being made miserable because of their behavior and my inability to deal with them. While I have no illusion that this single audio program will completely solve my problem it does provide valuable techniques for dealing with these people. The real blessing is in how the program teaches you to deal with aggressive types. It is not easy and will require practice, but these skills will help you hold your own during difficult confrontations if you prepare in advance. The program goes through 7 types of difficult people, most you will recognize immediately, some you rarely see. I have already recommended this program to my wife and many co-workers. It would make a valuable professional development program for our organization.

Not as impressed as others
Revisado: 03-22-08
Perhaps it was the thick accent but I really did not enjoy listening to this book. It has been a week since I finished it and cannot recal one really significant point he made. I will admit that I may have lost focus earlier and that slanted my view of the entire book. However, he had nothing to tell me to capture my attention. I may give it a second chance this summer when I have time but I get a lot more out of other authors.

Glad I listened- but still don't understand
Revisado: 02-26-08
I ride motocycles and this book certainly made me long for the open road. Anyone who has read it knows the book is much more than a road trip on a bike. It examines the development of Western thought and the duality of conflict between what people beleive to be "quality" in a (insert noun here). I have to admit that the discussion on Plato, Aristotle and such left me in the dust. Having taken no philosphy in school I have little foundational knowlege to go on. But it spurred my curiosity in "rhetoric" and how present day people share ideas. Going online helped me clear up some of the issues I had in lack of familiarity.
