I thoroughly enjoyed the narrative of a young boy discovering his extraordinary powers in a contemporary setting reminiscent of Harry Potter. Burnt Mountain excels in delivering suspense throughout its pages. The story revolves around a widowed father coping with loss while navigating his son's unique abilities, which hold the potential for global consequences. At times, I found myself frustrated with the father's inability to grasp the seriousness of his son's encounters with dangerous strangers who threaten their family and the world. The gripping suspense had me on edge, eagerly biting my nails, until the satisfying resolution where the forces of evil are ultimately vanquished. The tale beautifully concludes with the father, son, their friends, and a local sheriff from North Georgia achieving a triumphant ending.

I want to love this book because I love the chateau, but the writing has so many run-on sentences chock full of commas, I can hardly bear it. And the reader is too precise, too perfect and uninteresting. I read a few chapters and had to put it down.

While I love to listen to Anderson Cooper on CNN, I foiund his narration flat and boring. There were so many instances where inflection was appropriate, but I yawned throughout the book. I loved the writing and the subject matter. I wish he and his co-author would have hired an actor to read this book.

The storyline has merit, and I am interested to a point. However, if feels convoluted like amateur writing. Two people reading every other paragraph is disconcerting. But the quality of the reading is abominable. The man is a bit better than the woman. She can't follow her own punctuation, and her reading is broken in a way that makes it uncomfortable to listen. The editor should have guided, even argued with her clients. In the first few long, tedious chapters Johno says several times, 'And there she was, my black partner who is not happy to be my partner, sitting on the curb crying.' (Not word for word). He repeats this, and when referring to himself, he uses 'by my lonesome'. It sounds like a bad western. I am going to try to finish this book, but it will be hard. If it weren't for a dear friend who wants to compare notes, I would have ditched this reading in the first paragraph. It appears the pair did not have an audio producer who could have done more takes and gotten the reading better.

I feel bad saying this but I feel it must be said. I love this story but the reader makes all of the characters sound the same and they all seem to be barking at one another, so different from the story or the characters in the past. I have read over seven hundred books on Audible and other streaming devices since 2005 and this is the second only book that was really hard to stick to.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I loved the development of the characters and places. I could feel the dust and smell the places. It is one of the best written books I have ever read and I prayed for it to get longer rather than come to an end.Greg Roberts told his story with a full plate of life.

What other book might you compare Shantaram to and why?

It is so unique that it is hard to make a comparasion, but if I had to choose one it would be Sea of Poppies by Amatav Gosh.

Have you listened to any of Humphrey Bower’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not but I will look for other books he is reading because he made every drop of water, piece of plastic on the huts of the slums blow in the breese, and I could feel Carla and Lisa. His accents for each character made me come to know them all personally.

Who was the most memorable character of Shantaram and why?

So many. But Prabaker stands out the most other than Linbaba. He was actually alive in my mind. I can see his smile and hear his voice and I was devistated when he died in the taxi accident.

Any additional comments?

I hope Gregroy Roberts has more to say and that he can write really fast so I can imbed myself in his work again soon!!!
