Historia
Liberty is hardly the "natural" order of things. In most places and at most times, the strong have dominated the weak and human freedom has been quashed by force or by customs and norms. Either states have been too weak to protect individuals from these threats or states have been too strong for people to protect themselves from despotism. Liberty emerges only when a delicate and precarious balance is struck between state and society.

Great with minor issues in narration

Very clear narration with a few words misread. Coherent book. Plenty of examples as with the authors’ previous book, why nations fail.

Historia
In the post-9/11 West, there is no shortage of strident voices telling us that Islam is a threat to the security, values, way of life, and even existence of the United States and Europe. In this fearless, original, and surprising book, Anne Norton demolishes the notion that there is a "clash of civilizations" between the West and Islam. What is really in question, she argues, is the West's commitment to its own ideals: to democracy and the Enlightenment trinity of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Andalusian Enlightenment

In a world of ISIS and an immeasurable political mess from Alberta to the subcontinent, this book should bring Islam closer to the public than they ever thought comfortable. I can't tell whether this book is a more important read for westerns wary of Islam or Muslims hesitant with the expression of their faith. Westerners will enjoy a comforting, realistic read far away from fantastic news vomits. Muslims will enjoy an enlightening read of their own religion in a light they never saw shining.
