Historia
After attacking Devil's Reef in 1928, the US government rounded up the people of Innsmouth and took them to the desert, far from their ocean, their Deep One ancestors, and their sleeping god, Cthulhu. Only Aphra and Caleb Marsh survived the camps, and they emerged without a past or a future. The government that stole Aphra's life now needs her help. FBI agent Ron Spector believes that communist spies have stolen dangerous magical secrets.

Influenced me to look at author's other works
Revisado: 08-25-17
A thoughtful romp within Lovecraft's world. I very much enjoyed the story and her take on the world. I will likely research the author's other works.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

An intriguing story.

I enjoyed the story; it had a fair balance between the Old World mythology of the protagonists and their struggles adapting to the 'New World' of life in New York City.

Give it a chance
Revisado: 06-16-15
I was worried that it would be a weak Harry Potter knock off. It seemed that way in the beginning, but by chapter two it showed potential to be something more. I am concerned that some charters may turn out to be tropes, but am optimistic enough that I am going to buy the next book in the series.
