This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I don't know. I read the reviews and thought I'd purchased a winner, but I couldn't listen to it.

What didn’t you like about Scott Brick’s performance?

Too dramatic, too pretentious. He made A.J. completely unlikable for me.

What character would you cut from The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry?

Well, I didn't like A.J...which means there's no story.

Any additional comments?

Listening to this book (only about the first hour and a half) made me sad. I don't need to be sad. Life's too short to inflict sadness where there wasn't any before.

What did you like best about Death in Cyprus? What did you like least?

Best: MM Kaye does a good job of setting a scene. I could imagine myself there.
Least: Perhaps if the narrator were different, I would like the main character more. The narrator made Amanda, a 21-year-old, just sound so prissy.

Any additional comments?

Having read The Far Pavilions many years ago, I looked forward to listening to Death in Cyprus. I think it would have been much better had I actually read the print version. I did not like Amanda as read by the narrator.

Would you listen to Fire and Rain again? Why?

Probably not--however, I would listen to other books about the same time period.

What other book might you compare Fire and Rain to and why?

Girls Like Us--about Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon. It was fascinating to learn about the artists and how their lives and careers intertwined.

Any additional comments?

I was a junior in high school in 1970, growing up in a small town. I listened to and enjoyed the songs on the radio. But I wasn't really into the music as much as others, so didn't follow the artists at the time and didn't know the extent of their troubled relationships. What I found fascinating in listening to the book were the historical events--Charles Manson, Vietnam, Kent State, etc.--that were included as a backdrop to what was happening with these groups and solo artists.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Different reader, better content. Nothing here that hasn't already been said, and this guy doesn't even say it very well.

What was most disappointing about Deaver Brown’s story?

No meat there. I don't know who he is, but he strikes me as an arrogant guy. He's merely stating what has worked for him with no research to back up his claims.

How could the performance have been better?

Different narrator. However, the content might sound utterly ridiculous in a different narrator's voice!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The book is less than an hour and some of the info is repeated. I was disappointed that there wasn't much there.

Any additional comments?

Don't waste your money.
