Historia
Cannabis kingpin Burl Spoon has reigned over the Jackson County area for three decades, building a powerful backwoods empire. But behind a well-run organization, his personal life is crumbling—his daughter can’t stay clean; his son has hated him since coming out; and after enduring years of infidelity, his wife is straying too. The only person not on his payroll who still adores him is his six-year-old granddaughter, Chelsea.

Excellent, fast-paced read!
Revisado: 01-12-25
I accidentally bought the physical book and the audiobook of this, and it's so good, I'm keeping both.
They All Fall The Same tells the story of Burl Spoon and his missing daughter. In Burl's search for his daughter, and the revenge for what happens, a complex series of events takes place that kept me reading (listening, in this case) straight through. I am an avid reader, but seldom read/listen to a book in all one sitting. This novel, I did. I couldn't put it down.
The whole time I read, I was on the edge of my seat to hear what would happen next. Each thing that occurs throughout the novel is earned and well thought-out. I listened with anticipation of what would happen next.
If you like noir fiction and/or crime novels, you are sure to like this. I really loved this novel--and Burl is a trip. He's a bad guy you can't help but love and cheer for. I hope another novel featuring him comes out. I read Hillbilly Highway, also by the same author, which had Burl as a character in it, and it was also great. It's a gentler read, not quite so dark, but I loved it and it's why I read this one.
This is my favorite book that I've read in a while. I read over 100 books a year. They All Fall the Same is that good! The audiobook narrator is superb also.

Excellent, amazing collection of short stories—listen to it now!
Revisado: 09-13-20
This is the best short story collection I've read in years--hand's down. I’ve even read it in paper format and listened to it, it’s so good! It's beautiful and amazing. There were stories that made me cry, and others that made me laugh. Some of them I did both in the same story. My favorite stories are "Parkway," and “Saint,” but I loved them all. The narrators/main characters are all strong women, voices not heard enough in literature set in Appalachia. There is also a theme of needing to save the place--the environment--from destruction, which is definitely something that runs through Appalachia, which is so often taken advantage of for coal or timber or other natural resources. I adore this collection. Hampton is a talented, incredible writer. I can't wait to see what else she writes!

Historia
Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

I adored this book and the performance was hands down the best performed audiobook I’ve ever listened to—and I’ve listened to many. Wow! What a tale! Beautiful!

Historia
An "unleashed love song" to her late grandmother, Nickole Brown's collection brings her brassy, bawdy, tough-as-new-rope grandmother to life. With hair teased to Jesus, mile-long false eyelashes, and a white Cadillac Eldorado with atomic-red leather seats, Fanny is not your typical granny rocking in a chair. Instead, think of a character that looks a lot like Eva Gabor in Green Acres, but darkened with a shadow of Flannery O'Connor.

Excellent, entertaining, and engaging
Revisado: 09-22-18
Knowing Fanny through these poems is an honor. Nickole Brown brings Fanny to life in an even more vivid way than when I read the poems on the page. The verbal introductions before many poems help make Fanny a three-dimensional person, more than the poems alone. We hear Fanny’s recorded voice, which is funny and nicely spaced throughout the book. And through Brown, hear about Fanny’s life and her relationships with Brown, in particular, but also other members of the family.
This is absolutely the very best reading of poetry I’ve ever heard, recorded or live. Brown’s voice is melodious and a pleasure to listen to.
I can’t express how highly I recommend this book! Get is, listen to it. It is so good.

Exciting!
Revisado: 08-22-18
The action starts early, as is typical in a novel by David Joy. It’s hard to know what to say without giving away key plot lines, so I’ll say that if you’re already a fan of Joy’s work, this novel will not disappoint. If you haven’t yet read him, start and don’t stop until you’ve read all three. I have the audiobooks, Kindles, and paperbacks or hardbacks of most of them they’re such my favorites.
The audiobook recording is super. The way the depth and tenor of the performer’s voice changes with character is great.
I won’t lie, they’re dark, and if you don’t like gritty novels, this won’t be to your tastes, But if that’s your cup of tea, dive right in: you’ll be a fan.

In Jesmyn Ward's first novel since her National Book Award-winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural 21st-century America. An intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle, Sing, Unburied, Sing journeys through Mississippi's past and present, examining the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power - and limitations - of family bonds.

The performance of the male voices is outstanding! The female did very well, too, but I am blown away by the reading of the character Jo Jo. And as always, Jesmyn Ward's storytelling is impeccable: lyrical and lovely.
