This is touching, emotional, and very well written. The characters are well reasoned and multifaceted. It was easy to become invested in their lives and journeys.

I wish I could like this.

But I just can’t.

It’s a shame, really, as the main murder mystery is very interesting. If it weren’t twisted through with overwrought characters and poorly reasoned psychology, it would be a good read.

Unfortunately, this book is full of colorful, entirely disjointed characters, and rough hewn stereotypes. Much of the story’s events, the character’s motivations and actions, and even the history and town setting, come across as shoe horned together with the author relying on trauma dumps and character tropes to hold it all together.

Some of the information presented here I already knew, but so much of it was new to me. And there is so much information. Everything is well documented, clearly presented, and beautifully framed. I highly recommend this book for everyone.

This book was everything I wanted it to be and more. It’s well written, well reasoned and full of compelling characters. The romance is beautiful, but not the primary focus of the story so much as a deep enhancement of the experience of the two main characters. I’m moving into the second book immediately and looking forward to more.

Couldn’t even finish.

I don’t leave ratings for books I choose not to finish reading for one reason or another, but I felt I needed to put this out there. I had to stop listening when literal sexual assault was excused by every one in the book as just Gabe proving to Nate that he actually did want Gabe despite Nate repeatedly saying no and telling Gabe to back off. No more of this series or this author for me.

I find Kiera Andrews’ books a bit of a gamble. I’ve read some I don’t care for at all, and some that I absolutely love. This is the best of them thus far. A wonderful read, it was by turns intense, sentimental, funny, deeply emotional, and throughout, very well researched and written. The story is sometimes comfortingly predictable and then surprising in the best possible ways. And too, Jon Solo does an excellent job of creating just the right emotional tone from beginning to end. At times I felt like I was listening to a 1940s movie or radio play. I’d give six stars for the performance if I could. I highly recommend this book and all the emotions it brings to bear.

This series gets better with each book as they build on the ones before. The narration is excellent and the story is interesting and exciting. I’ll be watching for more to come.
