Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

Slow build, but WORTH it!
Revisado: 05-15-21
I love this book/audiobook. It's fascinating - a personal memoir/quest, history and science. If you like NPRs "Radiolab," you will like this book. I liked it from the very beginning, but it is a little bit of a slow build, so if it doesn't grab you immediately, keep going - it is so worth it. I just loved it.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

Thank God for David Sedaris
Revisado: 03-29-21
David Sedaris just gets better and better! His writing and delivery are still hilarious, but now there's more... more depth. Now he makes me laugh AND cry. I also find his books and his voice very comforting - he's helped me get through a really terrible year. I come back to David Sedaris over and over.

Historia
This collection brilliantly explores the ways in which women are horrifying, as much as it captures the horrors that are done to them. Spanning a range of genres and topics - from the mundane to the murderous and supernatural - these are stories about sex and punishment, guilt and anger, the pleasure and terror of inflicting and experiencing pain. These stories fascinate and repel, revolt and arouse, scare and delight in equal measure. And, as a collection, they point a finger at you, daring you to feel uncomfortable.

Fantastic stories, expertly written
Revisado: 05-13-20
These stories are fantastic. They are dark and funny and sometimes surreal, or rather, there is some magical realism (reminded me of Aimee Bender a little bit).
Also, she does some interesting stuff with POV in the Good Guy that would be hard for most people to pull off.
some stories are stronger than others, and sometimes a story starts out strong but then has a weak ending - still, overall, it's a great collection and I wish I could write like this.
If you are getting an MFA in creative writing, you will like this book.
Finally, the Narrators are superb.

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. Not as good as the Grapes of Wrath but good
Revisado: 01-28-20
Cummins is a talented writer and it's clear she did her research - she includes details that seem like only a native Mexican would know; so the protagonist is believable. The subject matter makes this book feel important. It's like a chance to know what it might be like to migrate to the US.
I don't remember who said American Dirt is like the Grapes of Wrath, but I'm not sure it's the best comparison. I was not moved by American Dirt the way I was by Grapes of Wrath... Sometimes I felt like I was supposed to be moved, but I wasn't and I'm not sure why - something was missing. Perhaps I wasn't invested in the characters as much? Or maybe the "moving" parts were not crafted in the "right," way, and there wasn't enough tension?
Still, I highly recommend American Dirt. It's exciting and thought provoking.

Spoiler Alert! And someone please explain...
Revisado: 01-18-20
This is a pretty good "who dun it" mystery, not the best, but enjoyable. The narrator is excellent - she does each voice well. Her characterization is just right, not overly dramatic or done in a way that takes you out of the narrative.
And now, if you havent read this book, stop reading! If you have, please help me!???
Is it just me, or did nothing come of Colleen's wedding ring and all tbe jewelry that was missing? Keith's watch? How could this detail just be left unexplained!? Did I miss some crucial part in the book???
If not, and it's just ignored, a loose end left untied - then I hate this book! I mean, i enjoyed it enough to listen to the whole book, but I can't get over this detail!
I wish we all had audible profiles that allowed us to talk to other members about books... it would be cool to see what other people are reading, what they have read. There is so much audible could do to make this entire app a much better experience. They havent made any major improvements since audible was released!

i bought this book so i could comment on all the 5 star reviews - they cannot be real! They all sound like advertising copy, not real people! I also listened to some of the book - just in case, but it's really not good.
i think audible should investigate these reviews!
im going to return this book and get my credit back now!

Historia
Rachel DeLoache Williams’ new friend Anna Delvey, a self-proclaimed German heiress, was worldly and ambitious. She was also generous - picking up the tab for lavish dinners at Le Coucou, infrared sauna sessions at HigherDOSE, drinks at the 11 Howard Library bar, and regular workout sessions with a celebrity personal trainer. When Anna proposed an all-expenses-paid trip to Marrakech at the five-star La Mamounia hotel, Rachel jumped at the chance. But when Anna’s credit cards mysteriously stopped working, the dream vacation quickly took a dark turn.

VOCAL FRY!
Revisado: 08-22-19
Rachel DeLoache Williams has a bad case of “vocal fry,” and also sounds like a little girl. I thought the story sounded interesting, but Williams included so many dull details - I couldn’t finish the book.

Here is the dazzling saga of two women: the brilliant, bookish Elena and the fiery, uncontainable Lila. Both are now adults; many of life's great discoveries have been made, its vagaries and losses have been suffered. Through it all, the women's friendship has remained the gravitational center of their lives. Both women once fought to escape the neighborhood in which they grew up - a prison of conformity, violence, and inviolable taboos.

Very dissapointed
Revisado: 07-01-17
I was very disappointed with this book, and the 3 books before this one.
This series was recommended to me by a writer and someone I respect very much. I have loved all her recommendations, except these books. I would not have made it to the 4th book if this person hadn't told me it gets better.
It never got better for me.
I think my biggest problem were the characters. The two women whose friendship this book follows over the years, are really selfish and obnoxious people. I didn't care about them, and the story was not engaging enough to make up for not liking the protagonists. I didn't care for any of the supporting characters either.
In the end, I found the entire series very dull and annoying.
I am also left feeling very confused why so many people seem to love these books. What am I missing here?
I suppose what I found annoying could also be interpreted as refreshing in that the characters are unapologetically nasty, (in my opinion) and maybe that's interesting enough?
Also, I didn't like the narrators voice. Perhaps her reading unfairly colored my experience of this series.
I do not recommend this book, or any of the books in this series.
