Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat.

Forgettable
Revisado: 03-06-20
Not Michael Poland best work and read more like a blog post than anything worth buying if I were to be honest. Not bad, and glad I got it through the amazon originals offer, but would not recommend it.
Again, not bad, just not my cup of tea. (Pun intended)

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

A Masterful Dissection of Data
Revisado: 02-19-20
If there is one book you read this year. Make it this one. Caroline breaks down the data, and lack thereof, behind many of the decisions we make as a society and how they impact women. It’s like pulling the veil from over your eyes.
I don’t consider myself a feminist, but I know a good argument when I see one. Very point is backed by numbers and experts. She even preemptively shoots down would-be counterpoints.
Just amazing.

Revisado: 02-08-20
Everything about this series has been amazing thus far. Timothy Zhan has rewritten Thrawn to be a complex and compelling character for the series while also tying together bits and pieces from the movies and series.
The bits into Empirial politics and wild space have been a breath of fresh air, but still VERY Star Wars. Can’t wait for the next book. Marc Thompson is doing the lord’s work with his voice acting.

I loved it. Dr. Novella does a great job putting together a beginner’s guide to critical thinking. He gives great examples of popular myths and how to use critical thinking and skepticism to come to one’s own conclusions about any given topic.
The final bit where he gives advice on how to approach communicating neither others is invaluable. Definitely a great purchase and engaging read.

The extraordinary Siddhartha Mukherjee has written a biography of the gene as deft, brilliant, and illuminating as his extraordinarily successful biography of cancer. Weaving science, social history, and personal narrative to tell us the story of one of the most important conceptual breakthroughs of modern times, Mukherjee animates the quest to understand human heredity and its surprising influence on our lives, personalities, identities, fates, and choices.

Not Siddhartha‘s best, but it’s absolutely compelling.
Revisado: 11-27-19
I’ve read a several of Siddhartha‘s books now and this one was quite good. He manages to create a compelling story by pulling us away from the macro/historical issues with genes by using modern people to tell more personal and compelling stories about the discoveries in genetics.
It felt like the last chapter was unnecessary, but once I was finished I understood the reason for its inclusion. Great book for anyone wanting a truly thoughtful recounting of the history of genes.
My only issue is the issue I had with “The Emperor of All Maladies.” The narrator is fine, but lacks any distinction, and I don’t understand why Siddhartha doesn’t just narrate his one books.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Yuval does an amazing job explaining human history in way that would make my Bio professors very happy. Each idea and working theory is contrasted with other theories leaving the reader with lore questions, but also debunking many myths about humans. Definitely worth the purchase.

Dereliction of Duty is a stunning analysis of how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia. Fully and convincingly researched, based on transcripts and personal accounts of crucial meetings, confrontations and decisions, it is the only book that fully re-creates what happened and why.

McMasters does not parse words. He speaks frankly about the errors made before Vietnam in such a way that would make hard lefties like Noam Chomsky swoon.
If anything, it shows that the people in the military are not always looking for military solutions. If you want a great and concise review of what lead to the war in Vietnam, this is a must read.

The Emperor of All Maladies reveals the many faces of an iconic, shape-shifting disease that is the defining plague of our generation. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance but also of hubris, arrogance, paternalism, and misperception, all leveraged against a disease that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out "war against cancer".

Siddartha is a fantastic speaker, and it's a shame he didn't narrate this book.
That being said, the pace of the book is a rollercoaster of emotion and the author perfectly captures the complex history of progress with various types of cancers. I will definitely be purchasing the physical copy. A must read and one of the best books I've read in a long time.

Revisado: 12-22-16
The voice actor is great, but somewhat lacking only by the news that Idris Elba would be the on screen version of the Gunslinger. The lack of music to set tones also leaves the audio book a bit dated compared to other works. The story is worth the investment though.
