Historia
In Origins, Frank H. T. Rhodes explores the origin and evolution of living things, the changing environments in which they have developed, and the challenges we now face on an increasingly crowded and polluted planet. Rhodes argues that the future well-being of our burgeoning population depends in no small part on our understanding of life's past, its long and slow development, and its intricate interdependencies.

poorly written overview of evolutionary biology
Revisado: 09-06-20
The content of this book is seemingly meant to supply a narrative of the main tenants of evolutionary biology across the earth's timeline. But the poor writing, pedantic style of the author, bad organization of the material, injection of superfluous and unrelated examples, and lack of important details on crucial issues showing critique of this approach leave this book tiresome and painful to endure. The reading of the content by this audio book performer further renders this text into an uninspiring range of drivel to rant.
There are dozens of alternatives from which you can garner this information in a more scholarly or lay format, whichever you prefer. Several of the Great Courses provide much better focused learning on segments of this micro and macro evolutionary process. This book is best left off your shelf (physical or electronic).

Historia
Livy continues his magnificent epic, with Rome in complete ruin after the Gallic invasion and sack of the city in 310 B.C. Led by Camillus, one of Rome's great heroic patricians, the city regains her self-confidence and once more becomes the leader of the Latin people. Painstakingly rebuilding alliances, forging friendships, cementing relations among her own people, and fighting endless wars, Rome soon becomes the dominant power among the fractious Italic tribes on the Latin plain.

The second part of Peterson's momentous five-volume work on spiritual theology, Eat This Book challenges us to read the Scriptures on their own terms, as God's revelation, and to live them as we read them. With warmth and wisdom Peterson offers greatly needed, down-to-earth counsel on spiritual reading. In these pages he draws readers into a fascinating conversation on the nature of language, the ancient practice of lectio divina, and the role of Scripture translations.

Written by G. K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy addresses foremost one main problem: How can we contrive to be at once astonished at the world and yet at home in it? Chesterton writes, "I wish to set forth my faith as particularly answering this double spiritual need, the need for that mixture of the familiar and the unfamiliar which Christendom has rightly named romance."

In his most ambitious work to date, Thomas L. Friedman shows that we have entered an age of dizzying acceleration - and explains how to live in it. Due to an exponential increase in computing power, climbers atop Mount Everest enjoy excellent cell phone service, and self-driving cars are taking to the roads. A parallel explosion of economic interdependency has created new riches as well as spiraling debt burdens.

Historia
Author and historian Tom Holland returns to his roots in Roman history and the audience he cultivated with Rubicon—his masterful, witty, brilliantly researched popular history of the fall of the Roman republic—with Dynasty, a luridly fascinating history of the reign of the first five Roman emperors. Dynasty continues Rubicon's story, opening where that book ended: with the murder of Julius Caesar. This is the period of the first and perhaps greatest Roman emperors. It's a colorful story of rule and ruination, from the rise of Augustus to the death of Nero.

a titillating story in place of insightful history
Revisado: 10-03-16
pros: narrative history with detail that attempts to bring the reader into the world of the Caesars.
cons: in attending to the salacious details of the personal depravity of emperors of the Julio-Claudian line , left to the wayside is any semblance of geopolitical, economic, military, or scholarly insights . Rather than explaining the Roman times and rule through the era, we are left with the author explaining the hidden truths of phallic thrusts and gender reassignment surgery as a 1st century metaphor for building canals through Italy and Greece. if you've read a lot of ancient Greek and Roman history, this will be a stark departure that will add no historical value, but may indeed be a Hollywood script.

excellent narrative approach. riveting history
Revisado: 09-06-16
I've read dozens of history books in the last few years. almost all on ancient Greco-Roman civilizations. this unique book on Byzantine history helped me immensely. it shows a far different perspective than western European sources such as Gibbon's "Fall & Decline of the Roman Empire" and modern day reincarnations.
the narrative approach was at first less interesting to me, but as the book moves along it becomes almost essential to the vast number of turns in the chronological explanation of the Byzantine story. in the end using this approach proved excellent and rewarding.
