A Bittersweet Spark

Utopia for Realists is basically the antidote to the 2000's, certainly the last 8 years or so. The book does a profound job of reminding us that A.) we've been here, on the brink, hundreds of times before; just not exactly like this. B.) It is not improbable that we could all fail‐-from the individual to the global, yet again. Or we could try miming peace again for another quarter generation, as per history. C.) That it is highly probable that this IS the exact right time for us to emerge as something better, regardless of our deranged history. And that is what Bregman gifts us. The gumption to believe that we are and can be a whole world of someone's wanting, willing, and determined to be better, to live better. NOW.

Went different than I thought. Very imaginative take on preternatural romances. Enjoyable story about sexy characters with some depth. I liked it!!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator does no justice to these books. The nuances of culture and rhythm are simply lost on her or not her strong suit. I will say she was adept at assigning a particular sound for each character and maintaining that. Unless the book is recorded in session by character then that's damn impressive. But for those of us die-hard Sci-fi and preternatural fans, who happened to be some shade of Black and/or Brown and seek reflections of ourselves within the genre, this is a massive slap in the face. To keep in the spirit of L.A. Banks, I would suggest a full multi-ethnic cast reading. Or if that can't work than: 1 Black woman, 1 White woman, and 1 hispanic woman.

What didn’t you like about Hillary Huber’s performance?

I remember someone introducing me to Laurell K. Hamilton and while I loved her series' I always look for the diaspora perspective in my genres. Did I get it!?! This was us; all of us. Accurately depicted and pleasant elevated in some cases. It was the language and how familiar it was to hear in your head that brought these characters to life for me;I'd like to think that was L.A. Banks desire. From that point, I was hooked gobbled up all the novels, the Crimson Moon Series, and the two stand alone she did for Ellora's Cave. Fast-forward, it's August 2017 and I'm really into audio books as my time is less and less my own. I find that audibles has finally picked up the Vampire Huntress Series with a woman named Hillary Huber as it's narrator. I made it through the Minion wanting to give the melanin deficient Sis a chance and support Madam Banks' camp. I didn't like it and I was/am offended and deeply disappointed. This woman just doesn't pull it off. And hearing her impression of what Damali and Marlene and Shabazz and Big Mike and Carlos sound like...basically comes off as white person impersonating Black and Hispanic culture. For example the ways she says "ask me how I know?", makes me wanna douse my phone in holy water and I scream every time. Awakening is even worse.

Could you see Minion being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Terrifyingly Beautiful

It's frightening time to be re-discovering Octavia Butler. But kinda necessary also. Been here for milennia and still can't seem to evolve pass our baser selves as a collective. It's the artist, philosophers, scholars, and authors I'm clinging to. Keep praying for humanities enlightenment.

You just kind of have to experience this one. It's pure genius and logic is unmistakeable. The quotables and wisdom interchangable but poignant none the less.
