Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

So distracting
Revisado: 10-05-22
The general performance and quality of the story were great .. but at every section break and chapter break there was this assault of noise. Some of it was meant to be background babble (from the story), but not only was that too much, all the other noises made for a high distraction.

Historia
As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

Gripping story
Revisado: 03-28-22
This story had nlme engaged and interested immediately. Hearing the struggles and challenges of Hyeonseo Lee has given me a better understanding of what North Koreans experience. There was not a stage of her journey that I found boring; even when thi gs were stable there was always underlying anxiety. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
In January of 2015, I stood in an upper room of the Brooklyn Borough in New York City to see the St. Francis of Assissi exhibition. I reflected on our own history as a young church - our own cycles of decline and renewal, crisis and change. I specifically thought about the current crisis catering on rejecting behavior towards the queer Latter-day Saints.

listen and ponder
Revisado: 08-30-21
This book gave me new insight into the theology of a religion I have been part of my whole life. I came away more confident in some of my views and questioning others. Worth the time to listen to.

Historia
Maya loves to cook with her grandmother - her Halmunee - to connect with the rich family history associated with each dish, a history Maya's mom would prefer stayed in the past. While cooking with Halmunee, something remarkable happens - the food creates such a strong memory that Maya and Halmunee are transported back in time through the memory itself. Halmunee explains that the women in her family have the gift of time travel through food and Maya can do it too, if she practices.

Great story, highly recommend
Revisado: 08-14-20
This is a story about memory, family and our connections to each other. There are many twists and turns in this story and it has a mystery to figure out. While there is a mystery and some heartbreak it is not a dark story, instead it is uplifting and a reminder of how one person can make an impact on our lives.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Powerful and surprising
Revisado: 07-27-18
An expert telling of the struggle between what you were taught by your family and what you learned in your own. Trigger Warning about abuse though. I was taken by surprise by it.
