Historia
Eddie Tipton went to prison in 2017 for masterminding the biggest lottery fraud in U.S. history. In a twisting and bizarre tale, he somehow mixed a cocktail of greed, Bigfoot hunting, deception, cybercrime, and a love of hot dogs on his way to a felony conviction after he and several accomplices scored a series of jackpots from rigged drawings but fell short on the biggest "score" of them all. It's a wild story of greed and misplaced confidence, and a study in public officials whose determination survived a nearly cold trail.

Interesting subject matter, poorly told story...
Revisado: 06-28-21
This is like listening to your drunk uncle tell a story you're interested in hearing, but he can't stay on topic, keeps going back and telling you things he already told you, gets caught up in the minutiae, and can't just get to the freaking point.

Why did she wear that jacket with "I really don’t care, do u?" printed on the back? Is Melania happy being First Lady? Wolkoff has some ideas....

Boring
Revisado: 09-04-20
Let me start by saying I absolutely despise Trump and his entire family, so that there is no misunderstanding that I'm just some MAGA wacko looking to disparage a book which casts them in a negative light.
This book is mind-numbingly dull, I couldn't get past Chapter 6, and only got that far because I assumed it had to get interesting at some point. None of the characters are likeable, sympathetic, or interesting--the author/narrator included. The book (at least the portions I tolerated before giving up) covers the minutiae of planning the Trump inauguration and setting up the executive office for FLOTUS.
There are no unexpected revelations, it basically confirms that Melania Trump is vapid and shallow with lots of "first world" complaints--as it would seem are her friends and the author.
The stories recounted do not suggest a close relationship between the author and Melania Trump--maybe they were close for NYC socialites--but there's just a lot of "air kisses" and emoji laden, fragmented, superficial text messages. To be honest, I have closer relationships with distant professional acquaintances.
The biggest take aways are that that the Trumps don't treat people very well and Melania and Ivanka don't like each other. Nothing new there.
If you've read the news reports about the book, you've already read everything remotely interesting contained within it.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Revisado: 04-10-19
If you have enjoyed the various documentaries, news reports and podcasts detailing the fraud perpetrated by Elizabeth Holmes, those only scratched the surface, you really must read or listen to this book.
Carryrou's tenacious investigative reporting and storytelling is fascinating and the narration by Damron is highly entertaining.

When Barbara Walters launched The View, network executives told her that hosting it would tarnish her reputation. Instead, within 10 years, she’d revolutionized morning TV and made household names of her cohosts: Joy Behar, Star Jones, Meredith Vieira, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. But the daily chat fest didn’t just comment on the news. It became the news. And the headlines barely scratched the surface. Based on unprecedented access, award-winning journalist Ramin Setoodeh takes you backstage where the stars really spoke their minds.

This was an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable book! It really takes you throw the whole chronology of the show and the backstage relationships, brings a ton of context to why various staffing and format decisions were made, and of course, lots of juicy gossip. The author has followed and written about The View, its hosts, and production staff for several years--his storytelling is credible and comprehensive.

Beautifully Written Memoir
Revisado: 03-12-19
Just finished What Remains last night--first book in a long time that I've listened to cover to cover in one sitting because I just couldn't step away. What a beautifully written memoir; it's refreshing to read a story told with such honesty, so many would elect to gloss over their own weaknesses or struggles, not Carole. I imagine this would provide great reassurance to those caring for a terminally ill loved one that they are not alone in those struggles.

McCabe provides profound insight into the operations of the FBI, it's interaction with other agencies, and the life of an career agent.
He provides context and background that fleshes out the stories behind recent headlines. The revelations in this book are fascinating, albeit disturbing, even for those who regularly follow the news and think they know all there is to know about Trump's efforts to obstruct justice and deepen the political divide.

Fascinating & Insightful Examination of Leadership
Revisado: 04-18-18
Make no mistake, as a lifelong liberal Democrat and supporter of Hillary Clinton, I was looking forward to this book as a take-down of Trump.
However, I was pleasantly surprised that the primary focus is instead on effective and honorable leadership.
Mr. Comey provides a candid and objective review of many leaders with whom he has worked over the course of his career.
Although I believed him to be a principled man, I was not exactly a fan of Mr. Comey and, as many Democrats, I partially blamed him for Clinton's loss. I am coming away from this book for a new found respect for him and an understanding of the immensely difficult decisions he was required to make.
The subject matter of this book is fascinating, but politics aside, as a business professional who has held leadership roles and mentored others, I strongly recommend it as a guide on effective leadership.
