Was fun and amusing at first, became ridiculous
Revisado: 06-29-22
I started off really loving it at first. the reader was amusing, writing cute, story had potential. but the I realized it wasn't supposed to be tongue in cheek, and the reader totally totally mismatched the intended story tone.
You think the story is going somewhere, but it doesn't. You think it'll become clever, that these bizarrely cliche characters will develop ingeniously, but they don't. The reader has every character voiced in this self-obsessed high school stoner feel, or preachy learned savant feel.
Sorry, it's just ridiculous. rarely do I get annoyed by a story, but I couldn't wait for this to be over.
Yuck.

It was ash on fingertips and vast. Stepping upon it gave the impression that it had come not from below, buffed by millions of years of wind slicing against rock, but rather from above; that, perhaps, it had drifted down and settled here. This is the post-apocalyptic sandscape that Calix and Annora must navigate - when they're old enough to join the scavenger crews outside of the domes, that is.

could not get into it. viewpoint is childlike
Revisado: 06-22-22
nice voice but the narration comes off as if reading to an incredulous child. the language structure feels immature, but has mixed in complex concepts and words. it just wasn't cohesive and therefore not immersive.

When he was 19, James Stark was considered to be one of the greatest natural magicians, a reputation that got him demon-snatched and sent downtown - to Hell - where he survived as a gladiator, a sideshow freak entertaining Satan's fallen angels. That was 11 years ago. Now, the hitman who goes only by Stark has escaped and is back in L.A. Armed with a fortune-telling coin, a black bone knife, and an infernal key, Stark is determined to destroy the magic circle.

Deliciously fun
Revisado: 06-15-21
Snarky, dark, and amusing, with a narrator that gives life to the characters perfectly. i love the idea of life in hell being more like a Mordor than a lake of fire, a far more interesting fantasy than the biblical version. I highly recommend reading this. beautiful written and well executed. thank you Richard and MacLeod.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

overhyped with mythology
Revisado: 11-17-19
the basic story of Teddy is interesting, and the factual storytelling is good. The narration and recordings pleasing. But the incorporation of mythology into the story, as if it's believable, is a huge spoiler. I don't even get the point of the Inupik angle, but it's so seriously incorporated it's tiring.

Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

the game of civilization
Revisado: 11-08-19
the game of civilization simulates the evolution of a civilization by gamifying the building blocks of technology, philosophy, science, under pressures of the needs and threats. this book has a similar feel. I enjoyed it, characters cool, threats interesting. there are a few features I thought felt weird. there's a lot of "Good idea. why didn't I think of that?" comments. it's as if everyone is shocked when someone applies common sense or logic. it's very libertarian, but you can see the pressures of development begging how this philosophy will sustain. I thought the blatant introduction of God and worship at the end very strange. 99% of world is dead, thanks God. maybe it's supposed to be tribulation time or something. still, great story.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

premise and build up good, conclusion weak
Revisado: 10-11-19
I did enjoy the development of the story. What occurs to these children is creatively horrifying and distantly believable, but the storytelling around the ideas feels incomplete. maybe it's the calm reading of the narrator that mismatches the horror, though I enjoyed his reading very much. I wanted a more immersive feeling and didn't get it.
Most unsatisfying is how the pieces integrate at the end. it comes across as very "forgiving" or overly rational. The antagonists, to me, deserved a fatal taste of their own actions. But the story seems to suggests that yes, this was evil, but you too reader can understand that sometimes evil might be necessary. Luke explains this thinking quantitatively (Bernoulli distribution) but I can't imagine than almost anyone would accept this storyline as ok, even if the institute were 100% right. I almost have story 3 stars for the apologetic finish and moral. above average enjoyable read, but not great.
