May be my all time favorite

This is probably one of my all time favorite books. I have re-read it quite a few times. It is lyrical and poetic. I love all the characters, but you can’t help fall in love with Will, the main character. I read Thirteen Moons when it first came out. As I get older, it’s interesting to return to this book, to see how different parts of the story have more meaning. But the sweeping story always pulls me in, like a place you don’t want to leave. This book is great in print, but Will Patton brings it to life in a way my minds voice cannot replicate! In fact it was this book that led me to Will Patton, and I’m always searching for more books narrated by him.

Interesting concept, but just fell short

This book actually hooked me right away, but just lost steam fairly quickly. The concept is intriguing, but there is just something missing. I got so bored, I really couldn’t even finish it, which is unusual for me. It became repetitive, and the only word I can think for the plot is shallow. Maybe I’ll circle back to it someday, but moving on for now.

Great story!

One of the things I love about Stephen King is he is just an amazing story teller. In fact he actually talks about this in the book, and the afterward. I actually love Kings style of writing too. If you love king, don’t skip this book!

Hard to follow at parts

I LOVE Stephen King. There are not many of his books that I don’t love, but this was one them. It was great in the beginning, but as the story went on, I had a hard time focusing. I found some parts to be really repetitive, and not very useful to the story. Then there was other parts where I felt I missed something and was rewinding to listen again. There were so many positive reviews, I was excited to find it, but it wouldn’t be a re-read for me (some of my favorites are Stephen Kings that I love to re-read).

Not my favorite SK

I love Stephen King, and I re-read my favorites. Sometimes I get the itch to experience another new one. I have skipped over Duma Key many times, but finally decided to go with it based on a chat where MANY people said it was one of their top 5 Audible books - not just SK books, all Audible books. I thought okay, maybe I’m missing something. The story was good, but I found myself repeatedly having trouble following along. The story just didn’t flow as well as others do. Also, I love SK’s goofy rhymes and catch phrases, but it was a little over the top in this book. Also, this is harder to describe, but I don’t typically find his books unsettling in his depiction of female characters. But there was times when he was describing the women in the book that was a little skeevy. He was talking about the young women, often through the context of their father’s thoughts/experiences of them, and would interject sexualized descriptions of them. It just seemed out of place, and definitely caused a bit of an ick factor. Narration was great, and it is a good classic horror/mystery, but it won’t be one I’ll re-read.

Another gift from Neil

I love many of Neil Gaiman’s works. There are some of my favorites that I re-read. This is sure to be one of them. And of course his narration is always amazing. I am also excited to share it with my kids! I am hoping this is the beginning of a LONG series.

Even better, and finally good audio!

I read this book years ago, and have referred to it often in my work. I have recommended it to many people. This audio edition is excellent, and I’m so glad to have a great audio version. This book is a must read for everyone, and especially women.

Don’t put this one off

Do we really need one more 5 star review of a great Stephen King novel? Maybe not, but I came here to say if you have put this one off like I did, don’t. I like many saw this movie years ago, and it was a great movie and story. But it’s sad, so often when looking for a Stephen King I have not read, I passed this one over. I definitely should not have - although then I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy it now when I have been a reading slump! This story is incredibly woven, full of thought provoking allegory. There are some Stephen King novels I like to re-read, and this will likely be one of them. Great audio performance.

Not worth a credit - maybe if you can get it on sale

This book was overall 3 stars because it did keep me listening. But the ending was really disappointing. I tend to avoid this genre because I don’t like how predictable, cliche, and undeveloped the characters and plot can be. The beginning of the book didn’t do a terrible job at this, then as the suspense builds - exploring the “who done it” aspect - it’s like it all falls apart. It feels as if the writer wanted to just get the book over, rather than building on the first part of the book. Almost as if the ending was in fast forward and it ends so abruptly. It’s like she just didn’t flesh out some plot themes - like how could the victim in the story be tied to so many guests that they become suspects. It’s a murder mystery so that’s kind of key! I enjoyed the different performers.
