Historia
We begin with a nameless young couple: a boy and a girl, teenagers in love. One day, she disappears . . . and her absence haunts him for the rest of his life. Thus begins a search for this lost love that takes the man into middle age and on a journey between the real world and an other world—a mysterious, perhaps imaginary, walled town where unicorns roam, where a Gatekeeper determines who can enter and who must remain behind, and where shadows become untethered from their selves.

The same over and over
Revisado: 02-15-25
One of the rare misfires from Murakami. It’s basically a reworking of Hard Boiler Wonderland and I don’t think it was a very good novel. Plots that go nowhere and a protagonists that is pretty whiney.
You have the Murakami staples, weirdly fantastical elements, and people who go missing, I wish he would have given us a more original work.

Loved the series…
Revisado: 01-23-25
One of the best series I’ve listened too. The stories progressed in a natural way and Shane Ryan is such a badass. Frank Bennidect was also a good character. I highly recommend this series

Historia
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.

One of the best current books I’ve listened too. I loved Tarantino knowledge of film and his passion for the 70s and the films that he loved. Makes me want to write a book about the films of late 80s and 90s that influenced me.

Historia
For the first time ever, the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has produced an audio recording of all of Lovecraft's stories. These are not dramatizations like our Dark Adventure Radio Theatre - rather, this is an audiobook of the original stories, in all-new, never-before-heard recordings made by the HPLHS' own Andrew Leman and Sean Branney exclusively for this collection. This collection spans his entire career from his earliest surviving works of childhood to stories completed shortly before his death. All tales include original music by HPLHS composer Troy Sterling Nies.

This has been the best narration of HP Lovecraft’s work. Often times his work can be frustrating but the narrators made it work. At 51 hours and only 1 credit, it’s an amazing bargain.

Sideways is the story of two friends, Miles and Jack, going away together for the last time to steep themselves in everything that makes it good to be young and single: pinot, putting, and prowling bars. In the week before Jack plans to marry, the pair heads out from Los Angeles to the Santa Ynez wine country.

Dark and Heavy
Revisado: 02-16-23
The book or the movie…
The book is very heavy and gloomy and dark but also adds a lot of insight on motivations and thoughts.
The movie makes the story flow so much better and has a more cohesive flow.
The girls in the movie are much more sympathetic and nice while in the novel Jack and Miles are very sympathetic. You see their plights and why they do what they do.
It’s a hard call. I liked the novel but it felt clunky in terms of its flow.
I love the movie and it’s in my top 10 of all time and I think of I had listened to the novel first I would have liked it less.

Good Conclusion
Revisado: 02-07-23
I liked the trilogy but the odd thing was that Rin became more and more unlikable.
She acted like a child half of the time but I guess since she was young it was in her character.
All the other characters grew and grew and there were some good twists and turns.
It was an odd story where the setting was in ancient times but the dialogue was modern day and to me that was jarring.
The Dragon Republic is the best of the 3.

Historia
When Toru Narazaki's girlfriend, Ryoko, disappears, he tries to track her down, despite the warnings of a private detective he's hired to find her. Ryoko's past is shrouded in mystery, but the one concrete clue leads him to a compound in the heart of Tokyo, with a group that seems to be a cult led by a charismatic guru. Narazaki plunges into the secretive world of the cult, ready to expose himself to any of the guru's brainwashing tactics if it means he can learn the truth about Ryoko. But the cult isn't what he expected, and he has no idea of the bubbling violence beneath its surface.

Weird but Solid
Revisado: 11-14-22
Cult X is a novel that is both intense and lyrical and has a very clear message about not repeating the past. It flowed well but sometimes the philosophical portions can be slow for some folks but I enjoyed it.
The story was good but sometimes it was jarring when it switched to another character but one gets used to it.
Definitely a rated R novel it’s brutal and weird and very Japanese.
Many Japanese novels end on a sort of weird note where not everything is resolved but it’s still very good.

In the first book of this brilliant series, Stephen King introduces listeners to one of his most powerful creations: Roland of Gilead, The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which frighteningly mirrors our own, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.
