Historia
The top-secret world that the government created in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks has become so enormous, so unwieldy, and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs or exactly how many agencies duplicate work being done elsewhere. Award-winning reporters Dana Priest and William Arkin here uncover the enormous size, shape, mission, and consequences of this invisible universe.

Information that all Americans should know
Revisado: 07-29-19
First, I want to comment on all the complaints about narration - this isn't a novel. It's a work of non-fiction based on extensive investigative reporting. The author does a fine job of relaying her information in a clear manner. Is she Scott Brick, reading a riveting spy novel? No, nor should she be.
Getting on to the important stuff - the content. The authors have done years of research, conducted countless interviews and vetted all information and come up with an incredibly important summary of their findings. The amount of power the nations' intelligence agencies hold, absolutely undermines much of what America was built upon. We are supposed to have a government "of the people, by the people and for the people." Maintaining secret forces that have no real oversight from our elected officials is contrary to our Constitution.
We all need to be aware of the abuse of power and hold our elected officials to higher standards. The endless wars are making America *less* safe while costing us money that could be used to help make Americans' lives better. Let's hope more people wake up and take part in this incredibly important movement.

In this must-listen book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and businesspeople - both seasoned and new - that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called "grit". Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur "genius" Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success.

A must-read for all ages
Revisado: 10-09-17
After hearing the author on one of my favorite podcasts, I knew I had to get this book!
With each anecdote, I found myself nodding my head in agreement. This is no faddish management fluff piece - it is a hard hitting manual for how to behave in order to realize one's potential.
As a successful entrepreneur and lifetime competitive athlete, I totally agree with the author - the difference between excellence and mediocrity is what she calls 'grit'.
I highly recommend this book, and plan on giving copies to many people I know who are struggling to succeed in life.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Investigative journalism at its finest!
Revisado: 08-12-17
After hearing an interview with Nick Bilton on Triangulation, I had to hear this book. I was somewhat familiar with the Silk Road, but had no idea about the real story behind it. Nick Bilton reveals the life and inner workings of Ross Ulbricht's mind in a manner more compelling than any spy novel. As the story unfolds, pulling in various members of the U.S. security forces, the reader is drawn in further. I simply couldn't put the audiobook away!
I highly recommend the Triangulation interview with Bilton after hearing the book. It goes into much of the nitty-gritty hinted at in the epilog, giving one an even greater appreciation for the incredible sleuthing Bilton did in order to put together this masterpiece of investigative journalism.

Historia
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

The most important book I've read
Revisado: 10-02-12
I just finished “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking” and must say it’s the most important book that I've ever read. While it’s focused on the introverted personality, it provides keen insights into understanding all people. I wish that I had read this decades ago!
It doesn't matter if you’re an introvert or extrovert, parent or child, teacher or student, husband, wife or partner, boss or employee – this book helps you comprehend and interact appropriately with people of all types. And, when it comes down to it, understanding others is the foundation for both building relationships and maximizing our own potential.

Shakes you to your very core.
Revisado: 09-23-12
"The Survivor" is one of those rare books that truly affects the reader. This is more than your typical thriller - the characters draw you in; the story visceral and horrifying, and Scott Brick's narration is, as always, spot on.
I listen to thrillers for pure entertainment and escape, so I wasn't prepared for the emotions brought up by "The Survivor." Hurwitz managed to touch my nerves to such an extent that, at times, I had to stop listening in order to recover from the horrible images he planted in my imagination.
Be prepared to be terrified. This is no ordinary book.

My time is already gone!
Revisado: 07-11-12
I've come to expect great things from Audible books, and "Already Gone" sounded like the kind of book I'd like - intrigue, action and suspense. But what I got was an inane and unbelievable case of 1-dimensional characters. And now my time is "already gone" and I'll never get it back.
I'm used to books like those from Daniel Silva, Vince Flynn, even David Baldacci - books with characters that evolve and plots that have subtlety. "Already Gone" had neither of these.
The main character is naive beyond belief, and repeatedly acts like a complete doofus. I kept hoping that he'd do something that showed a modicum of intelligence or clear thinking but it never came.
I could go on, but why bother, I've already wasted too much time on this book. My only hope is that I can prevent others from wasting their money and time.

Not the strongest Rapp story
Revisado: 05-03-12
It's hard to tell if it's the totally inappropriate choice of narrator or a weaker than usual story, or both but it was hard to enjoy Separation of Power like I have most of the others in this great series.
I can say for certain that the narration was a big disappointment. The high pitched, nasally narration simply didn't do justice to the characters. After all, were talking about high-powered, testosterone filled men.
The story itself lacked the feeling and depth I've come to expect from Flynn. Fortunately, there are a lot of other books in this series, almost all of which are in my library, so I can go on to enjoy those again and again. But I don't think I'll be re-listening to this one.

A truly unfortunate choice of narrator
Revisado: 04-01-12
Unfortunately, I must concur with all the other reviewers who complain about the narrator. Sullivan marred a perfectly good story with voice acting so poor that it was painful. The at times robotic and others whiny and nasal, and sometimes just plain clumsy, breaking....sentences at places...that made no sense.
Unless you're a true fan of Vince Flynn, I have to suggest you avoid this audiobook - it simply doesn't do justice to the writing.
Note to Audible - you hurt your reputation and that of the author by allowing such unfortunate narrations. You would greatly benefit from re-recording this book with the master who narrated the other Flynn novels - George Guidall.
