Historia
Alice's journey begins as all good journeys do: hitting on the sales guy at REI. After a tumultuous breakup, a quick career transition, family upheaval, and a sobriety journey that didn't fix her life quite as much as she expected it to, Alice decides that the only way to solve all her problems is to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. But as she begins preparing for the months-long quest, she realizes the answers she's seeking might not be on top of a snow-covered mountain. Especially since she just learned there was snow in California.

Historia
Eat Pray Love meets American Psycho in a seductive and sinister debut literary thriller. Food critic Dorothy Daniels indulges in her homicidal urges by murdering her lovers and devouring their organs in this intense, visceral, and lushly told tale of food, sex, power, and the pursuit of a very particular taste set between New York and Italy. Please Note: A Certain Hunger contains adult language and depictions of violence. Discretion is advised.

Exactly what you’d expect
Revisado: 11-21-24
The story was exactly as described. Lots of food, sex, and murder. But the narration was a little static and felt a little dry for the content.

Historia
Our narrator produces a sound from the piano no one else at the Conservatory can. She employs a technique she learned from her parents—also talented musicians—who fled China in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. But when an accident leaves her parents debilitated, she abandons her future for a job at a high-end beauty and wellness store in New York City.

Absolutely wild
Revisado: 10-31-24
This story starts out as a well-meaning adventure of a super talented pianist who studies at a conservatory and then has to take care of her immigrant parents so she gets a job at a fancy wellness company that gets SUPER WEIRD. And the weird parts are CRAZY. I don’t know how to say anything else about it without spoiling it. The writing was tight, and the imagery was impeccable and vivid. I gobbled it up in one sitting. Great narration. Great story!

In this “rich, complex family saga” (USA Today) full of long-buried family secrets, Marilyn Connolly and David Sorenson fall in love in the 1970s, blithely ignorant of all that awaits them. By 2016, they have four radically different daughters, each in a state of unrest.

No one needs the baby voice
Revisado: 10-25-24
The story was a lovely family saga. The narration was otherwise a great performance but there were four daughters and two grandsons, for all of whom the narrator felt the need to speak as baby in baby voice with baby talk. Unnecessary

An impossible task
Revisado: 10-16-24
This story was so heartbreaking, but the way he shares his perspective on Molly and her role in the life they shared left me conflicted. I’d hate to hear all these things about me after I died. The first section and the last two sections were written so beautifully. Thank you for producing this Audible!

Historia
A poet's life is turned inside out by a sudden, wrenching pain. The pain brings him to his knees, and eventually to the ICU. Confined to bed, plunged into the dysfunctional American healthcare system, he struggles to understand what is happening to his body, as someone who has lived for many years in his mind. This is a searching, sweeping novel set at the furthest edges of human experience, where the forces that give life value—art, memory, poetry, music, care—are thrown into sharp relief.

Unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Delicate attention to every detail and interaction. Beautiful prose from the POV of a poet whose life is threatened by a failing body. Read so earnestly. I will never forget this book.

Historia
In the early 1980s, Giselle Chin, Jackie Ong, and Ellen Ng are three teenagers drawn together by their shared sense of alienation and desire for something different. “Allied in the weirdest parts of themselves,” they envision each other as artistic collaborators and embark on a future defined by freedom and creativity. By the time they are adults, their dreams are murkier.

East Coast Nostalgia
Revisado: 08-30-24
I loved everything about this book. Wow. 3 Asian girls growing up in Bergen county New Jersey, then living in NYC in the late 90s. So much of that offered little treats of nostalgia for me, but this book would have been brilliant without all that. The self-discovery was primal and necessary for these characters. The final part that takes place in the future (only 15 years from now) — while it contained aspects reminiscent of 1984, the forbidden remembering that was depicted stirred up memories for me from my time making forever friends in NYC in a way I haven’t felt or couldn’t feel until now. This was a love letter to NYC and that time and I wish I could read it again for the first time.

Wrong Voice
Revisado: 08-18-24
The narrator’s voice sounded like Mary Poppins. Neither paradise nor rot. Inappropriate for visualizing a young woman exploring her sexuality.

Historia
In the near future, a civil servant is offered the salary of her dreams and is, shortly afterward, told what project she’ll be working on. A recently established government ministry is gathering “expats” from across history to establish whether time travel is feasible—for the body, but also for the fabric of space-time.

Revisado: 07-19-24
Great premise. Strong start. Time travel always feels convoluted to me. Love story was weak. Narration of the different characters’ voices made it hard to picture the suggested age of the characters.
