As with so many other popular writers, and this after his death, Cussler's heroes once again foil amazing villains and save the world. Of course, we all know at the start there's the little piece of 'ancient history', then the switch to modern times and one of several sets of Cussler heroes. We know, like James Bond and Hercule Poirot and so many others, that the heroes will be possibly in grave danger, battered and bruised perhaps, but will triumph in the end. Even knowing all that and having read several dozen of Cussler's books, they're still a lot of fun. Scott Brick is the best reader I've ever heard for this type of book.

I've been reading a very entertaining biography of the colorful Mary Roberts Rinehart and, a half century after I first read this in high school, returned to it here. What a delight! I usually don't like such dated mysteries, and this definitely identifies itself as a product of its time of writing--but this was a joy. The reader was also delightful; I have no idea of her identity but she sounds convincing as a middle aged spinster. I'm going to search for more of Rinehart's books here.

One either likes Lucy Worsley's work, or doesn't. I'm a fan, have always enjoyed her documentaries on British television, and when by chance I discovered this book on this site, snapped it up. Very well researched and fortunately even-handed as others have not been about Agatha Christie, what makes the book so delightful is that Worsley read the audio herself. I know I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much with any other reader. I've read and loved Christie's books since the sixties so didn't really learn much new about her or her work, but it was fun also to revisit the fine lady.

I am not a frustrated unpublished writer. Unfortunately, almost all books on writing, if not memoirs like Stephen King's excellent book, are formulaic-type things aimed at luring in these frustrated writers in to learn secrets and practices to get their works done and published. Not Goldberg. Like in "Writing Down The Bones", Ms. Goldberg hits the practice as pleasure in its own. This appeals to me, as it did when I first read "Bones" in the mid eighties. She's such a treasure, and unlike so many writers, she's a great reader!

I was quite disappointed when I started this book, as I thought it was something quit different from what it turned out to be. Instead, I enjoyed it immensely. I love biographies, and this was so well presented that I felt an acquaintance with each of the many authors highlighted without being overly exhaustive. The bio's are given first, then a separate little piece on "the writer's day" at the end of each author's chapter. I also didn't expect to like the narration, as I initially thought the woman's voice was too high and sing-song. However, the more I listened the more I enjoyed it. So many books on writing are published to try and guide frustrated amateurs to become professionals. This book, fortunately, didn't do that at all.

Had I seen this book in print in a brick-and-mortar, I would've perused enough to know it wasn't for me. I have no doubt that this book might be useful for those either trying to actually publish a memoir, or perhaps get a good grade in some class. I'm not trying that at all. My interest in the memoir is more personal than this lady goes on and on about; I think immediately of Natalie Goldberg's "Writing Down The Bones" along with others. Further, I just don't like this lady's reading her own book. I find her self-congratulatory voice irritating and am really glad I never had to attend one of the classes she brags about teaching. It's my mistake for not catching the more superficial nature of the book, and while I'm no prude, I find her crude language wearying, like someone dying their hair green for attention. There are so many better books that I've read on this type of writing. Learning writing is very much an individual thing, and this method and the method of teaching causes me to regret purchasing the book.

I've been reading Walter Mosley's books for a few decades. However, this is the first one I've done on audio that I can remember; certainly none recently. This reader is excellent, a pleasure to listen to, and if only all readers fit that description for me. Whether I say that I enjoy the book or not, I'd hope that people could instead draw their own conclusions. This is at least the second, and probably the third, reading for me.

For forty years I've enjoyed writing about my experiences and my memories, long before the current fad called 'journaling'. I first read Goldberg's "Writing Down The Bones" in the 80's and have loved her outlook and writing ever since. I'd love to be able to attend a class of hers; you can see her in speeches and interviews on YouTube. This is a fun little book. She emphasizes in this book the same thing she does in "Writing": just get going! I agree completely that sitting and thinking about writing is nothing; it's the writing that counts, good, bad, or in-between. I'll never have anything published, and don't want to. This book reminds me of why I enjoy writing, though.

I first bought and read this review in the 80's and it was a revelation. Virtually all books on writers writing were some form of instruction, a format trying to guide. This book was, and is, completely different. Even more than 30 years later, it's still fresh, it's still definitely relevant, which is why it's still popular and in print. Ms. Goldberg is a great reader! I'd seen some interviews and speeches with her on YouTube. She speaks clearly and in an unhurried manner. I'd love to take one of her classes in person, but this is such a great way to revisit the book.

Another Winner From Daley!

Tom Daley has been in the public eye since his preteen years. Now pushing thirty and having competed in four Olympic games as a diver, he is rather unique in sports. He is obviously quite intelligent, not that that's unique, but he's also very articulate with a capability found more commonly in professionals in entertainment or academia. This autobiographical book is broken into chapters of traits, not strictly chronological. Daley has a voice made for broadcasting, and I saw in an interview that he would like to get into media commentary. If this fine book is an example of his ability, I expect we'll see him doing just that. Highly recommended.
