Historia
Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous—and she loved it. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides.

I was disappointed with this book.
Revisado: 11-11-24
I am a true crime aficionado. I don’t know what I was expecting but the author found a way to make the storyline a bit boring and the most graphic of the details were a little too much. Seemed like they were in there for shock value. Listened to the whole book but can’t say I got anything out of it. Listen to “In Cold Blood”. Now that is a true crime book.

Historia
Twain's classic tale of a young boy and his runaway slave friend, Jim, is still one of the best novels about human nature ever written. Readers will delight in the many wonderful episodes, including a deadly feud, the comic grumblings of the Duke and the King and Tom Sawyer's grand scheme to rescue Jim from captivity.

Historia
All Americans are familiar with the "day that will live in infamy". On December 7, 1941, the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor. In less than an hour and a half the Japanese had almost wiped out America's entire naval presence in the Pacific, but one of the aspects of the war most forgotten is that the Japanese simultaneously launched concerted attacks against American targets elsewhere in the Pacific that the same day, including one against the strategically located Wake Island.

I was very interested in this story
Revisado: 09-19-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Many years ago I had the honor of knowing a gentleman who was a young worker for Morrison Knudsen on Wake Island when the Japanese invaded. He spent the entire war as a POW. I heard some of the stories, not many because they were stories of cruelty and horror and he had moved on and did not wish to dwell on them. For that reason I had a personal and strong interest in this book. I think it was fairly well written although I wish it were longer and more detailed. I really dislike criticizing the narrator but I felt like it was read without passion or investment. Sort of like listening to someone read a newspaper story out loud. The frequent sibilant on pronouncing everything with an "S" was distracting. I am glad, however, that I listened to the book. There were many hero's in this story. I wish I could have met more of them.
Would you be willing to try another one of Scott Clem’s performances?
Probably not, sorry!
Was The Battle of Wake Island worth the listening time?
Yes, wish it were longer.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

A great story about a great man
Revisado: 09-14-17
Would you listen to John Adams again? Why?
I wouldn't listen to it again because in the spirit of John Adams you should always look ahead and not behind.
What other book might you compare John Adams to and why?
I also listened to David McCullough's book on Harry S. Truman which was also narrated by Nelson Runger. I had difficulty at first with the John Adams narration because Mr. Runger's voicing of John Adams was for me, very similar to the voicing of Harry S. Truman. Every time I heard John Adams speak I saw Harry Truman's face. But that was a small and humorous point. Mr. Runger did a superb job.
Which character – as performed by Nelson Runger – was your favorite?
No favorites, I enjoyed it all
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Due to the length it wouldn't be possible to listen in one sitting but it was an absolutely compelling book and I find John Adams to be a heroic person. I would love to time travel back to that time to just be able to spend one hour in the company of such a great person.
Any additional comments?
The description of the death of John Adams on the 4th of July, the 50th anniversary of the founding of our country moved me to tears. I felt like I had lost a close friend. I would recommend this book very highly and not just to those who enjoy history. It should be mandatory reading for every young student.

Historia
In 2008 veteran journalist Evan Wright, acclaimed for his New York Times best-selling book Generation Kill and co-writer of the Emmy-winning HBO series it spawned, began a series of conversations with super-criminal Jon Roberts, star of the fabulously successful documentary Cocaine Cowboys. Those conversations would last three years, during which time Wright came to realize that Roberts was much more than the de-facto “transportation chief” of the Medellin Cartel during the 1980s, much more than a facilitator of a national drug epidemic.

Listen at your own risk
Revisado: 07-15-17
Would you consider the audio edition of American Desperado to be better than the print version?
I would definitely recommend the audio version over a print version. The way the story is told is captivating.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It is hard to find a favorite character in a book full of despicable characters. There is no one that comes to mind who is even likable, but like a gruesome car wreck you can't look away.
What about Mark Bramhall’s performance did you like?
He nailed it, nothing else to say.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were a hundred moments that moved me and reminded me to not be naive about the evil that exists all around us. The characters in this book prey upon the good nature of innocent people who want to think the best of someone.
Any additional comments?
This was a compelling book so well written that I cannot do it justice in a review. The only downside is finding a book now that comes anywhere close to being half as interesting and compelling. It is like having the best day of your life and then realizing that you will never have another day quite as good... now what do I do?

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Beautiful storyline, excellent performances.
Revisado: 07-07-17
Where does Water for Elephants rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is my very favorite so far.
Who was your favorite character and why?
There were two primary characters, they were very different from each other but they were both so beautifully done that I could not pick a favorite. I guess my favorite was the one that I was listening to at that moment.
Which scene was your favorite?
I Ioved them all. I especially liked the timeline changes back and forth between Jacob in his twenties and Jacob at 90, or was he 93?
Any additional comments?
I have a new commute that is one hour each way each day. Audio books in general help me with my commute but this book in particular actually caused me to be disappointed when I reached my destination, I didn't want to stop listening. This is a perfect book on audio because the actors do such a wonderful job and the book was brought to life much more than if I had just read a paper version of the book.
