Historia
After travelling the whole world, can exploring a single map ever be enough? Adventurer Alastair Humphreys spends a year investigating the small map around his own home. Can this unassuming landscape, marked by the glow of city lights and the hum of busy roads, satisfy his wanderlust? Could a single map provide a lifetime of exploration?

A "Walden" for our times
Revisado: 01-26-24
Is it too much to call it a "modern day Walden"? Perhaps, but it evokes the same feelings: a sense of wonder; a desire to get out and see the world immediately around you; a rekindling of appreciation for the places nearby.
I felt myself trapped between wanting to listen more and wanting to start my own local adventure. Too often, we want to travel the world in order to see new things and have new experiences. This book has shifted my perspective and made me realize that everything that I can get from far away travel can be obtained within a short bike ride and walk from my house, with the added benefit of doing my part to save the planet along the way.
Thank you, Alastair! Another brilliant book in your already incredible catalogue of adventure tails.

What is it like to build a life from living adventurously? Another brilliant book by Alastair Humphreys
Revisado: 01-26-23
Humphreys has done it again, but this time from a different angle. Rather than telling a tale about one of his incredible adventures, this book is about his daily life as an adventurer. He provides wonderful insights and actionable advice for would-be adventurers, solopreneurs, and those just looking to challenge themselves to do more. Great read!

Historia
In 1935 a young Englishman named Laurie Lee arrived in Spain. He had never been overseas. His idea was to walk through the country, earning money for food by playing his violin in bars and plazas. Nearly a century later, the book Laurie Lee wrote - As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning - inspired Alastair Humphreys. It made him fall in love with Spain - the landscapes and the spirit - and with Laurie's style of travel. Alastair dreamed of retracing Laurie Lee’s footsteps but could never get past the hurdle of being distinctly unmusical. This year, he decided to go anyway.

A coming-of-age story
Revisado: 02-16-21
Alastair shares his struggles with transitioning from a life of being lone traveler, extreme adventurer to a husband and father. While most will never live his adventurer life, we’ve all had to cope with those transitions from one stage of life to the next.
This is a remarkably honest and illuminating look at Alastair’s own struggles and triumphs with life’s changes and provided helpful insights for my own life.

Historia
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

I lived vicariously through Alastair. I visited all these places through him while being forced to stay home through the pandemic. It’s an amazing read, especially right now

Historia
Does nature really make us feel better? The 3-Day Effect takes a look at the science behind why being in the wild can make us happier, healthier, and more creative. Whether it’s rafting down Utah’s Green River, hiking in Utah’s wilderness, or walking through Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, scientists are finding that the more exposure humans have to nature, the more we can benefit from reduced anxiety, enhanced creativity, and overall well-being.

Fun story; more like a podcast
Revisado: 06-14-19
I'm heading over now to read, "The Nature Fix" by the same author, which I'm really looking forward to. I feel like this was the podcast follow up to that book. It has some great, real-life stories, but little scientific research or meat (other than the small data points of the trips they catalogued). Each chapter felt like a weekly story in a podcast, even replaying previous parts of the "book" several times. Still very good; just not what I was expecting, given the description.

Historia
We may not realize it, but children are hyperaware of money. They have scores of questions about its nuances that parents often don't answer, or know how to answer well. But for Ron Lieber, a personal finance columnist and father, good parenting means talking about money with our kids much more often. When parents avoid these conversations, they lose a tremendous opportunity—not just to model important financial behaviors, but also to imprint lessons about what their family cares about most.

I have already starting implementing these techniques with my kids and they work!
Revisado: 01-15-18
A must-read book for families. I came home every day after listening to the book on my commute and discussed the principles and ideas with my wife. We have already starting implementing them with our two young children and we can see the benefits already.
One thing to note: there are so many good reference materials that it almost makes more sense to have this in hard copy, even if you rarely read hard copy books. I’ll probably buy it just to have the copy.
