Historia
Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. On that day, the Kaiser took Theodosia's family, her land, and her name. Theo was crowned Ash Princess - a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner. For 10 years, Theo has been a captive in her own palace. She's endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. She is powerless, surviving in her new world only by burying the girl she was deep inside.

Solid narration, intriguing story
Revisado: 04-28-25
The narrator of this audiobook is exceptional — expertly and seamlessly weaving different characters together. The story held my interest and I consumed it rapidly.
*Spoilers*
However, Theodesia seems to be a very black-and-white thinker who doesn’t weigh her options (perhaps this is an age thing?) — there’s only enemy and “her people.” I do not understand why she’s convinced she needs to poison her friend or try to murder the prince. It’s all very reactive and poorly reasoned.

Historia
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust. Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.

Better on paper
Revisado: 02-08-25
I listened to the audiobook of Onyx Storm because my book preorder was late. I opted for a reread-listen once the physical copy arrived because there’s a lot to digest and I’m a visual learner. I quickly spotted numerous misreads by the narrator where her words literally did not match the words on the page. Apparently there’s no QC making sure the words in the book get said as written out loud? Also, I’ve seen lots of interviews with the author where names are pronounced and Mira’s dragon is apparently NOT pronounced “tiny” so that was disappointing.
The story held my interest but by the end of my re-read I’m annoyed by Violet and Xaden’s dynamic. She’s giving a petulant, oblivious Bella Swan (“I CAN SAVE HIM”) vibe while he is fully in broody Edward Cullen mode. Andarna, Ridoc, Mira, Aaric, and Tairn are the highlights of this book for me.

Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Witty characters and solid narrators

This story had me hooked from the start with a sassy protagonist and kept my attention by keeping me guessing on whether I could trust Lucy or any of the people around her. Solid narration and story.

Exceptional story, bad male narrator
Revisado: 10-19-24
This story was one of the best I’ve heard/read all year. Fully captivating plot, dynamic characters, and a fantastic slow-burn romance. I imagine if I read this book in hardcover or if only the wonderful female narrator did the audiobook (who, for the record would get 5* for performance), it could exceed my ratings for most of the Throne of Glass and ACOTAR series. It’s truly a standout!
That said, this book unfortunately DOES feature the male narrator who seems utterly incapable of ending a sentence on a full stop. I read the reviews and didn’t understand the fuss until a few chapters in — when at 1.5 speed I was getting absolutely hammered by his Chihuahua-like enthusiasm — and then it clicked. The manner in which he speaks is like a British male version of a Valley Girl accent where the intonation is always bordering on a question. Or a lower-pitched version of Stuart from MadTV, where it’s all kind of breathless and frantic. It’s disappointing the narrator reads/speaks this way because his voice and accent is a cozy combination of Jude Law and Jeremy Wade. I’d gladly listen to him read sleep stories if it wouldn’t send me into a panic attack from the never-ending upward inflections. Sigh.
So, I will absolutely be continuing this series, but not on Audible. Not if the male narrator makes a reappearance, anyway.

Slow start but worth it
Revisado: 10-19-23
I was struggling to get engaged with the first 30 minutes or so but found this book just as compelling as the rest in the series once it got some momentum. There were some time jumps that felt jarring — which maybe wouldn’t be so jarring in hard copy with an actual page turn vs. audiobook format.

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

Captivating with great narrators
Revisado: 07-29-23
This story held my interest over several days of commutes and bedtime listening. The narrators were interesting and great to listen to with the variety of voices and accents. First-person narratives often blind me to a character’s flaws but this one had a really delicate dance of complexity and believability, which left me shouting “girl, you’re crazy” at my AirPods. Bravo!

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Compelling. Heartbreaking.
Revisado: 01-15-23
Prince Harry, with the help of a truly gifted ghostwriter, puts the reader in his shoes. Imagine what it would be like to be raised in a family with virtually no affection, no candor, conflicting self-interests, and a hierarchy that exacerbates the inherent challenges. Imagine an industry that exists to profit from your worst moments, and that will puppeteer them if they don’t actually exist. And imagine those closest to you being incapable or unwilling to push for the boundaries you need to be safe and sane.
He truly is Diana’s boy. Rage against the machine, Harry. It’s broken.
I may not be royalty, but I have privacy, freedom, and a truly loving family. Thank you, Harry, for reminding me how rich I am.
I hope the next 32+ years of Harry’s life bring all the peace, justice, clarity, and hugs that eluded him during the first 32.

Poor storyline
Revisado: 11-22-21
This is an entire book that essentially takes place over 24 hours and centers around a 40-year-old, her spouse, and a son who clearly need therapy… unrelatable, unendearing, unremarkable. 30-something friends with young children and major medical conditions taking time to not only attend a ridiculously self-indulgent party but also spend money and time on the birthday girl’s lavish gifts? That just doesn’t happen. The premise is far-fetched, characters are underdeveloped, and the ending is implausible. Skip this one.
The only redeeming factors were the British accents and pleasant voices of the audiobook narrators. The recordings were incredibly slow, but thankfully Audible allows you to listen at 1.7x speed.
