Historia
Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left without a trace when he was nine years old. He doesn’t know what happened to her—only that her books have been banned—and he resents that she cared more about her work than about him.

It could be today
Revisado: 11-26-23
This is a novel that could easily be about today. So many tidbits are taken from stories around the country that you begin to feel edgy about what’s to come in our own lives. The book is a slow burn. It takes a while to unfold but I was drawn to the characters and thought the plot was well developed and interesting. The book is extremely thought provoking. Well worth the read.

Miserable
Revisado: 06-10-23
While I was very anxious to read another book in this series I found the protagonist to be extraordinarily unappealing. The author wanted to create a strong female coming into her own, she actually created a “whiney” unappealing caricature of an early feminist. Don’t waste your time.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. Extraordinary multi-generational story
Revisado: 06-10-23
An exquisitely written saga of human connections and frailties. The book is full of well developed characters that are both flawed and heroic. Readers will find it hard to put down. The reader was terrific.

Plodding plot
Revisado: 12-10-22
I read several good reviews about this book so I stayed with it hoping for a plot twist or the storyline would imaginatively evolve into something that held my interest better. But ultimately it was a book much like life. Flawed, uninteresting characters, struggling to make their way under changing economic conditions. I didn’t find any of the characters particularly likable. Nor was there any true villain so it just wasn’t very compelling.

Historia
Sylvie Pelletier recounts leaving her family’s snowbound mountain cabin to work in a manor house for the Padgetts, owners of the marble-mining company that employs her father and dominates the town. Sharp-eyed Sylvie is awed by the luxury around her; fascinated by her employer, the charming “Countess” Inge, and confused by the erratic affections of Jasper, the bookish heir to the family fortune. Her fairy-tale ideas of romance take a dark turn when she realizes the Padgetts’ lofty philosophical talk is at odds with the unfair labor practices that have enriched them.

Not very shiny Gilded Mountain
Revisado: 11-27-22
The story was hindered by annoying narration. The narrator made all Southern voices sound like backwoods hillbillies. How people speak has long determined what group people belong to and which group people are welcome to be apart. This is a book about class in the Southeast in the early 20th C. Southern elites of that era had drawls but their speech was distinctly distinctively different than mountain people, and the uneducated. Class struggle is central to the storyline, as is a love story about individuals from different stations in society. The audio book would have been more enjoyable—and believable—if the narrator’s voice distinguished class more accurately.

Ink Black Heart
Revisado: 11-20-22
This may be a more fulfilling novel in a non-audio format. However given the novel centers around an internet game with clues found in written internet communication among many users, the reading of who was typing messages back and forth was at times tedious. Moreover there are many characters with odd Twitter handles in this book also making an audio version a bit more challenging to follow and keep characters organized in one’s brain unless listening is done very attentively. The series main characters remained true to past series volumes which kept the novel appealing but the story itself was not particularly interesting.

Historia
Over the course of a single year, our nameless narrator heroically tries to keep her small brood of four chickens alive despite the seemingly endless challenges that caring for another creature entails. From the 40-below nights of a brutal Minnesota winter to a sweltering summer which brings a surprise tornado, she battles predators, bad luck, and the uncertainty of a future that may not look anything like the one she always imagined. A stunning, brilliantly insightful meditation on life and longing that will stand beside such modern classics as H is for Hawk and Gilead.

Brood
Revisado: 04-06-21
A humorous book about a couple raising chickens. I totally enjoyed the book but found the narration of the audio book to be flat and at times monotone. However if you are looking for a short book to listen to that has a good mix of humor and information on urban chicken farming, you’ll likely enjoy the book.

Mediocre Story
Revisado: 03-29-20
Story was far too predictable and lacked sophistication in how the plot was unfurled to the reader. I found the book to be too much love story drama and not enough substance. The narrator, however did a good job.
