Historia
Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) - the only English commoner to become the overall head of state - is one of the great figures of history, but his character was very complex. He was at once courageous and devout, devious and self-serving; as a parliamentarian, he was devoted to his cause; as a soldier, he was ruthless. Cromwell's speeches and writings surpass in quantity those of any other ruler of England before Victoria, and, for those seeking to understand him, he has usually been taken at his word. In this remarkable new work, Ronald Hutton untangles the facts from the fiction.

I enjoy history and biographies, but gave up on this one fairly early on. It just lacked real life.

Great novel--but narration often too quiet
Revisado: 02-08-25
This is a great novel which brilliantly and amusingly contrasts English and Italian characters and cultures. We downloaded it to listen to on a drive, but eventually gave up because the narrator so often speaks so quietly that it was impossible to hear the words. This is an obvious flaw, and the editors/producers should have noticed it.

Historia
This riveting debut set in 1534 England secured C. J. Sansom’s place “among the most distinguished of modern historical novelists” (P. D. James). When Henry VIII’s emissary is beheaded at an English monastery, hunchbacked lawyer Matthew Shardlake is dispatched to solve the crime. But as he uncovers a cesspool of sin, three more murders occur - and Matthew may be the next target.

Historia
Adopting the structure and themes of the Arthurian legend, Steinbeck created a Camelot on a shabby hillside above the town of Monterey, California, and peopled it with a colorful band of knights. At the center of the tale is Danny, whose house, like Arthur’s castle, becomes a gathering place for men looking for adventure, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging—men who fiercely resist the corrupting tide of honest toil and civil rectitude.

interestinga dn amusing set of short stories
Revisado: 02-08-25
This is more a set of short stories than a true novel, although they do form a continuous narrative. They are amusing. The basic idea of all the characters is to get by and drink lots of wine while not working. But I found it a bit disappointing compared to great works like The Grapes of Wrath or East of Eden. Narration was fine, but not exceptional.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Great novel, excellent narration
Revisado: 02-08-25
I read this a few years ago and thought it was a truly great novel. Listening to it only confirms this view. The marvelous detail with which Steinbeck describes the world the characters live in, and the well-defined characters themselves, are wonderful. His depiction of the grim struggle poverty entails is unequalled. The narration is superb: every character given a distinctive voice, and the old fashioned vernacular perfectly captured.

Historia
It is 1873. Mrs. Eliza Touchet is the Scottish housekeeper—and cousin by marriage—of a once-famous novelist, now in decline, William Ainsworth, with whom she has lived for thirty years. Mrs. Touchet is a woman of many interests: literature, justice, abolitionism, class, her cousin, his wives, this life and the next. But she is also sceptical. She suspects her cousin of having no talent; his successful friend, Mr. Charles Dickens, of being a bully and a moralist; and England of being a land of facades, in which nothing is quite what it seems.

Authors are often not the bets readers of their work. But Zadie Smith does a great job with al the accents. I found the story fascinating. But I wish Dickens hat come into the foreground more.

Historia
Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

OK story but predictable. Cringeworthy protagonist
Revisado: 02-01-24
There was just about enough story to keep me listening. But I found Molly the Maid rather hard to take. I understand that she's meant to be somewhat autistic. But as a character I found her very inconsistent: sometimes absurdly naive; at other times quite shrewd. She quotes Shakespeare 'Out damned spot' but is bewildered by a commonplace from Hamlet. She speaks like a 19th century novel, but shows no interest in reading. She poses as very honest and truthful; and then at the end reveals that she's been concealing something vital from everyone. Overall, I found the goodness of the "goodies" in the story rather sickly.

But success breeds enemies, and Nellie’s empire faces threats from without and within.

An entertaining novel. The usual Kate Atkinson voice: wry, slightly humorous accounts even of serious stuff. Rather a large cast of characters, and only a few of them are really fleshed out. Brilliant narration.

FIne prose; superb narration; story a bit tedious
Revisado: 06-14-23
St. Aubyn can certainly write, and he's able to capture experiences and moods very well. Alex Hemmings narrates brilliantly. But I found the characters and storyline rather tedious. All the characters are from the upper classes, and with one or two exceptions they're pretty insufferable. Many of them seem to be caricatures of snobby upper class English twits, money-obsessed, philistine or flaky Americans, oily Frenchmen, etc.. There is nothing to love in this world, much to despise, and here and there some people one might pity if they did anything other than wallow in their privilege.
