Historia
At the approach of the first millennium, the Christians of Europe did not seem likely candidates for future greatness. They saw no future beyond the widely anticipated Second Coming of Christ. But when the world did not end, the peoples of Western Europe suddenly found themselves with no choice but to begin the heroic task of building a Jerusalem on Earth. In The Forge of Christendom, Tom Holland masterfully describes this remarkable new age, a time of caliphs and Viking sea kings, the spread of castles, and the invention of knighthood.

A tough topic tackled with Holland’s power of prose
Revisado: 02-01-24
The subject matter is more esoteric compared to Holland’s works on Ancient Rome. Historical figures and events are less known to the layman so following the narrative feels slightly convoluted on occasion (prepare for a bunch of guys named Henry and Edward). However, this time period in general is convoluted by nature so I feel Holland actually did well in presenting a history with a narrative sequence to it. Perhaps this shouldn’t be your introduction to the topic, but then again it may be one of the more entertaining ways to be introduced.

Historia
The Pax Romana has long been shorthand for the empire’s golden age. Stretching from Caledonia to Arabia, Rome ruled over a quarter of the world’s population. It was the wealthiest and most formidable state in the history of humankind. Pax is a captivating narrative history of Rome at the height of its power. From the gilded capital to realms beyond the frontier, historian Tom Holland shows ancient Rome in all its glory

Narrative History at its Finest
Revisado: 12-14-23
Tom Holland is a master of narrative history, detailing the events of Ancient Rome with the same drama and intrigue as could be expected in a thriller novel. Rubicon and Dynasty (his previous two books on Rome) are both great but Pax may be my favorite out of the three. Holland’s sophisticated prose and diction are present as ever here but the overall narrative is easier to follow. Unlike Rubicon and Dynasty, however, he narrates his own work in Pax. Initially I was speculative of the result as his voice doesn’t carry quite the gravitas of his past narrators. However, his enunciation is clear and his infliction is subtly engaging—even when listening at 2X narration speed. Ultimately, I came to enjoy this book even more by hearing Holland himself tell the story of Pax Romana. A fine addition to any history enthusiast’s library.

Historia
Against the background of an age that saw the rebirth of ancient and classical learning, Paul Strathern explores the intensely dramatic rise and fall of the Medici family in Florence as well as the Italian Renaissance, which they did so much to sponsor and encourage. Interwoven into the narrative are the lives of many of the great Renaissance artists with whom the Medici had dealings, including Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Donatello as well as scientists like Galileo and Pico della Mirandola.

A fantastic account of a family and their influence
Revisado: 11-19-23
This is one of my favorite books I’ve read this year—surprisingly so. I didn’t know much about the Medici family but after a recent trip to Florence I was inspired to learn more. Strathern’s riveting account not only narrates this family’s harrowing history in exciting detail fit for an adventure novel, but also interweaves the related history of the renaissance genius and how the Medici were integral to this. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galileo, and many more make up a star-studded supporting cast, all of whom benefited from the Medici. A great read for anyone, even those who don’t like history books that much.

Historia
In 1508, despite strong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo Buonarroti to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel in Rome. During the four extraordinary years that Michelangelo spent laboring over the ceiling, power politics and personal rivalries swirled around him. He battled ill health, financial and family difficulties, inadequate knowledge of the art of fresco, and the Pope's impatience - a history that is more compelling than most novels.

Surprisingly Entertaining
Revisado: 11-06-23
Even being as big a fan of Michelangelo as I am, I am pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed King’s engaging history of the great artist and his masterpiece. Michelangelo’s rivalry with Raphael, his increasingly cold relations with Pope Julius II, that same Pope’s political turmoil across Italy, and other personal details of the artist’s life—are woven into the primary story of the Sistine Chapel project, making for an engaging narrative that tricks you into thinking you’re reading a drama as opposed to a history. The narration is also articulate and easy to follow, even while listening at double speed. I definitely recommend this for anyone wanting to better appreciate the genius of Michelangelo.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

A poignant yet powerful pursuit of peace
Revisado: 07-06-23
I’ve largely dismissed the British Royal family and what I felt was the public’s frivolous interest in them. After reading Prince Harry’s memoir, I now regret some of my sentiments, at least towards him. In so many ways he was pressured or outright forced to live a life he didn’t ask for—rather, no one would ask for—and yet he progressively seeks out independence and peace. And of course, hearing the story from the man himself makes it all the more compelling.

Golden Globe nominee Scarlett Johansson ( Lost in Translation, Girl with a Pearl Earring) brings a palpable sense of joy and exuberance to her performance of Lewis Carroll's enduring classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The young and imaginative Alice grows weary of her storybook, one "without pictures or conversations", and follows a hasty hare underground - to come face to face with a host of strange and fantastic characters.

A timeless allegory for growing up and reckoning the world
Revisado: 07-01-23
This is the first time I actually read the original story of Alice in Wonderland. Like many, I grew up knowing the tale as told in the Disney animated film. This version set up my suppositions about how the book may read—erring more on the side of fantastical whimsy than anything else. In reality, the book is both an allegory for growing up and a satire of “adult” society, steeped with colorful characters that will conjure up real world examples for anyone. Furthermore, Scarlet Johansson provides an engaging performance for the entire narration, each character being provided with a unique and vibrant voice. Overall, this is a great read/listen for anyone!

Every leader must be ready and willing to take charge, to make hard, crucial calls for the good of the team and the mission. Something much more difficult to understand is that in order to be a good leader, one must also be a good follower. This is a dichotomy - a Dichotomy of Leadership. It is, as authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin explained in their best-selling first audiobook, Extreme Ownership, “Simple, Not Easy”.

The real-world lessons of leadership from Jocko and Leif return as an invaluable augmentation to their original discourses in Extreme Ownership. One does not need to read this former book to relate with Dichotomy of Leadership, but it will definitely make the comprehension of “Dichotomy” easier and faster.
