It's short, it's sweet, it's...a mite predictable. But honestly, if it had a twist ending, I would have been disappointed in the character previously established.

Blume does a great job re-hashing details of his world in a way that means this could be a stand alone novel, but doesn't feel onerous for those who did read West of Apocalypse. It's just a quick tale in Ayleen's quest for revenge that we didn't see in the book because it was easily summarized as "got some money off world." But there is character and adventure in that sentence, and Blume made sure to pack it into the hour and change.

As with the original, McCulloch does a great job nailing Ayleen's attitude that focuses on revenge while still acknowledging there is a living and breathing universe around her. She also does a good job giving that same attention to detail to each other character, granting a unique voice to everyone who graces the screen (earbud?) for even a minute's worth of listening time.

A book that feels as much Sci Fi as Fantasy as Western, bringing the best of each genre to one package. The worldbuilding especially stood out to me, creating a rich tapestry for the story to unfold within. The magic system in the book is not ever really explained, but you are given enough to understand the rules of this world, and recognize what the magic can and cannot accomplish, helping to create stakes. The foreshadowing in this book was done with a skilled and delicate hand, creating multiple pay offs through the stories as the gears turn and the questions get their answers.

The narrator brings the characters to life with distinctive voices all while reading in tones that make for easy listening. She manages to capture the conviction that define's Ayleen, the charm and wit of some endearing allies, and the ruthless or blasé attitudes of the villains masterfully.

Rating only slightly reduced because I found myself critiquing a few issues with history and villain motivations at a few places through the book. If the primary characters in the book are reliable narrators, then a few characters (protagonists and antagonists both) made some strange decisions in a few key moments. It didn't make the book less enjoyable, just minor quibbles.
