What’s the mood?

Not sure what is going on with the narrator. These stories could be touching, funny, dramatic, poignant, but the deadpan delivery turns it all into a sober tale with very little emotion or perspective. It is difficult to understand what the narrator is feeling about any of it. Disappointing.

The worst of the series

Every time I try to listen to this, I become frustrated and give up. It’s so convoluted and emotional, totally out of character with the other Albert Campion/detective Luke titles. The weeping and whining couple in at the center of the story are unbearable. Nanny Broom is an idiot, and the intuitive leaps. Luke goes to our only balanced by his complete obtuseness regarding his main suspect. I loved the other books in this series, but this one is a lemon.

Angry Narrator

Another disappointment. Why was the reader angry all the time? Couldn’t he have saved some of the emotion for the moments that required it? He wantonly spread lashings of scorn through dialogues which would have been better served with a variety of moods, including friendliness, placidity, surprise, pleasure, and warmth. Extremely frustrating to listen to. In addition, characters in different social classes were indistinguishable from each other in terms of accent.

The story itself, and the writing, was clunky, and not carefully edited for the inclusion of modern vocabulary.

For me, this was a miss.

Unbearable

I could not finish listening to this audiobook, the narrator’s choice of accents and her intonation were truly awful.. Wherever the emphasis should have been in the sentence, she chose to put it somewhere else, changing the meaning of dialogues and narration, and making nonsense out of what might have been decent if not brilliant writing. It became so irritating and frustrating that I gave up. The story itself has glimmers of real interest, but could have used an editor to help with continuity and the many quite repetitive passages. I think the two main characters might have been quite sympathetic if the narrator had not bungled their portrayal. Do not recommend.

Ukridge is a jerk

Jonathan Cecil - the best Wodehouse narrator ever, but even he can’t redeem Ukridge, the Michael Scott of his era. Don’t bother with Love Among the Chickens, either.

If only ...

I wanted to find a new series to love. But this won't be it. The relationship at the center of the story is implausibly illustrated with modern vocabulary and phrases. A dull and frustrating listen, the narrator making it worse by overdoing the preposterous sarcasm. Really not worth it. After Ngaio Marsh, Georgette Heyer, and Patricia Wentworth this feels cheap and foolish.

Not the best Ngaio March

I'm a big fan of the Inspector Alleyn books, but this is not the best of them. The story is thin and the narrator has made some odd choices for the voices of the main characters. Alleyn' voice is particularly irritating. Too bad.

Pathetic, unsympathetic characters, repetitive and predictable storyline, and a gory ending. Don't bother. Really. Was impressed by the narration until realized it took three to make it happen.
