At the center of this searing fever-dream of a novel are two men - a killer awaiting trial and a troubled young deputy - sitting across fromeach other in the dark, talking through the bars of a county jail cell: JohnGload, so brutally adept at his craft that only now, at the age of 77, has he faced the prospect of long-term incarceration; and Valentine Millimaki, low man in the Copper County sheriff's department, who draws the overnight shift after Gload's arrest.

classic, predictable Steele
Revisado: 09-19-18
Why have a male narrator when it's a woman's life story, told in her own words?
Steele books always seem to focus on babies and details about pregnancy and childbirth.
I enjoyed the beginning of the book, which focused on hey life during the war, then that second half after she was married.

Historia
After the death of her adoptive mother, Ava Saunders comes upon a peculiar photograph, sealed and hidden away in a crawl space. The photo shows a shuttered, ramshackle house on top of a steep hill. On the back, a puzzling inscription: Destiny calls us. Ava is certain that it's a clue to her elusive past. Twenty-three years ago, she'd been found wrapped in a yellow blanket in the narthex of the Holy Saviour Catholic Church - and rescued - or so she'd been told. Her mother claimed there was no more to the story.

illigical
Revisado: 08-29-18
it's just not logical that Ava would do all that just to get the name of her mother, and then the book ends without us even knowing it! it doesn't make sense, and there were too many characters that were alike. And the ending is just to unrealistic.

Historia
Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her - her identity, her spirit, her will to live - pay. Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: Every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at 17 years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.
Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life.

not realistic....
Revisado: 08-12-18
The narration was great, I'll start with that positive. Unfortunately, the teenage characters were just not believable. High schoolers do not have this much insight into others and even themselves at that age. This might have been more logical if the characters were in their late 20's, maybe. Too much introspection to be plausible. And the story really had nothing to do with the main character seeking revenge on her assailant, which is what the summary says the book is about. It was more of a teenage love story, which is not the type of book I would choose to read.

unbearable narration
Revisado: 08-01-18
I couldn't finish this book did to the narrator. He has an awkward cadence and it's distracting. Also, instead of just reading and slightly changing his voice for different characters, he exaggerates everything and everyone. it's like he's acting on stage the entire time and I couldn't concentrate on the story.
