It’s a hard message to sell to your kids, but….
Revisado: 06-16-23
Telling them that anything is possible with hard work is true in almost every sense. Trying to convey that the greats in sports got there partially because they were blessed with the right physique for their sport, but mostly because of the work they put in is a tough sell but with examples like these it paints a clearer picture. Hard work is essential if you want to truly excel. This is clear in sports as well as life.

Simply armed with the senses you already have, an expert guide, and a glass of your favorite, you can learn how to better enjoy the wine you’re drinking, while at the same time gaining a deeper recognition for your own tastes.

Misleading and certainly not worthy of being labeled as a Great Courses book…
Revisado: 06-06-23
I have come to expect thoroughness when listening to The Great Courses books and this has been the first that has really been a letdown. The subject matter is so vast that just a quick flyby of the info is misleading. The one thing I appreciated though was the fact that the book at one point basically says, “who cares what everyone else likes, drink what tastes good to you and that’s all that should matter.” Which should be focused on more often than not. I think there’s a misconception in wine where people think they need to dissect it in order to appreciate it. If you’re not in the camp that has a need to do that, then you shouldn’t feel bad or guilty. Having said that, wine is fascinating the deeper you get into that and I hope The Great Courses expands their catalogue to include more wine education.

Historia
Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself.

Historia
Are stars like Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Serena Williams genetic freaks put on Earth to dominate their respective sports? Or are they simply normal people who overcame their biological limits through sheer force of will and obsessive training? In this controversial and engaging exploration of athletic success, Sports Illustrated senior writer David Epstein tackles the great nature vs. nurture debate and traces how far science has come in solving this great riddle.

What's with the accents...?
Revisado: 02-06-20
What is the cost to have an audiobook completely re-recorded? Asking for David Epstein.
I read through some of the negative reviews of this book and thought, "How bad could it be, REALLY?"
It was REALLY that bad. Every time Epstein tried to (completely and utterly unnecessarily) use one of the accents of the people he was quoting I first- cringed, second- wondered if I could fast-forward, and third- just realized I toned out what he was trying to say and would have to go back and re-listen to it anyway.
Don't get me wrong, the book was interesting but I haven't been this uncomfortable listening to a book in a long time.

What a fun escape!
Revisado: 09-20-18
I am a child of the 80s. Every step of this book was exciting for me, and the references that Cline sites were a blast back to the time when I was growing up. Every now and then I would Google a scene from a movie that he was referencing, and it would just draw me into the story even more. I know it goes without saying, but the way they modified the movie takes so much away from the story itself. So much so that I almost wish I never watched it. The book by itself was such a fun ride. I'm recommending this to all my friends but I'm going to wait a little before letting my 12 year-old listen to it. There are some mature references in it that kids aren't ready for quite yet.

Revisado: 07-21-18
Gary V’s story is very cool. His energy is infectious, his ideas are fresh, his enthusiasm is enviable, and his drive is unstoppable. Gary has everything cranked up to 11 and I feel like if anyone can tap into a fraction of that energy, you will have no issues with being successful. Listen to this, and everything else he has written. This guy deserves success with the amount of hustle he gives.

He has some good points...
Revisado: 07-21-18
But seriously, WHY does religion need to make its way into the lecture? He made some good points, but you have to ignore the used car salesman-y delivery, and the background noise.
If you want the tl;dr version: visualize what you want so much you can taste it, then don’t stop until you’ve achieved your goal. It’s part trying to convince you that we’re all connected to this mysterious web that binds everyone in the universe, and part you need to hustle after what you really want in this world.
