Historia
In the canton of Yarrowdale, at the very edge of the Empire’s reach, a Treasury officer has disappeared into thin air—vanishing from a room within a heavily guarded tower, its door and windows locked from the inside. To solve the case, the Empire calls on its most brilliant and mercurial detective, the great Ana Dolabra. At her side, as always, is her bemused assistant Dinios Kol. Ana soon discovers that they are investigating not a disappearance but a murder—and one of surpassing cunning, carried out by an opponent who can pass through warded doors like a ghost.

Outstanding.

Excellent followup to The Tainted Cup.
Ana and Din are investigating the disappearance and then murder of an imperial treasury agent when it turns into a plot that could bring down the heart of the empire itself.
Robert Jackson Bennett is so very good with his characters. Main characters and side characters alike feel so fleshed out, with their own quirks and mannerisms and ideals.
I also really appreciate how the world is teased out of the plot as it hums along at a steady pace, and in a way that doesn't have you working through info-dumps, while also leaving so much open for possibilities or later explanations.
This is an auto-buy author for me, and I am eager for more in this world.

After sitcom star Willow tweets herself into infamy and stumbles blind-drunk into a swimming pool, her agent ships her off to Camp Castaway. Nestled deep in upstate New York, Castaway is a summer camp for adults who are desperate to leave their mistakes behind. No real names, no phones . . . no way to call for help. Willow’s fellow campers seem okay. Her own favorite actress is even here, making a s’more. And did that jaded writer, Dani, just wink at her?

Fun slasher
Revisado: 04-13-25
This was such a fun slasher.
"Willow" is the newest arrival to Camp Castaway. Castaway is a digital retreat for adults looking to disconnect from the world for a few weeks.
No TV, no phones, not even any music. Just nature and self reflection. This is the ideal place for Willow who's running from her very public identity.
Things quickly unravel though, as they always do in slashers because, as we know, "all summer camps are cursed"
This was brutally, fast, and fun. The characters were interesting while the story was everything we expect from a great slasher.

A cyberpunk city filled with new dangers they could barely imagine. Beneath their feet, humans are little more than prisoners scraping out what they can under the illusion of protection. It was supposed to be a fresh start. A chance to become more than their miserable existence allowed.

Kind of hectic
Revisado: 03-25-25
The 1st half of this story felt like it was so organized and well polished. I was liking the characters more, and the narrative felt smart.
The 2nd half it felt more like book 1 and the characters felt like they were regressing. I'm going to keep reading the series but this kind of felt hectic.

When a gentleman called Joan lands up in a care home, Jim doesn't know what's hit him—everything about his new neighbour is triggering. And Joan is a colourful, combustible cocktail—ticking. Battle begins. May the best man win. But beneath antics and antique armour plating, what are both hiding? And maybe they just may be batting for the same team. An uproarious and uplifting romantic comedy about grey liberation.

Written like stream of conscious poetry and heartbreaking and hopeful. The story talks about taking in every last drop of life and about the grief of loss and finding ways to live your truth even in small bits.

Historia
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Amazing story. I liked the multiple POVs and while I only really emotionally connected with 1 of the characters the various back stories really helped to make the world feel real.

This was, simply put, an absolute joy to read.
I loved the characters in all of their flaws and aging, unfiltered, emotional baggage. Their depth and heart kept me smiling. Their bawdy humor kept me laughing out loud.

Historia
In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger.

This was a wonderful story. It was beautifully written. The author was very adept at building a truly fascinating world while keeping the plot moving at a steady pace.
So many fantasy authors struggle to keep their stories moving while they bring us into their worlds bit this was masterfully done.

This is my favorite kind of writing. You're thrown head first into a fast moving plot as you're introduced to the cast of characters and the world building and back stories are teased out as they relate to the plot in motion.
Definitely a good, quick, read for fans of space horror like Alien.

You know, I picked up book 1 in this series because it was free on Audible and the title was absolutely absurd. Book 1 gripped my attention within the 1st 30 minutes and I order the entire set in paperback and bought the audio books as well.
The cast of characters aee wonderful and flawed and human. The story is engaging and fun.
This series has been one of my most enjoyable reads so far this year. Thank you, David Slayton.
