Playful, Papal, Pulpy

A fun and quick listen. Unfortunately there is a wretched, high-pitched whine that interrupts the reading quite often. A very distracting issue in an otherwise fine performance.

Historia
Goethe’s two-part dramatic work, Faust, based on a traditional theme, and finally completed in 1831, is an exploration of that restless intellectual and emotional urge which found its fullest expression in the European Romantic movement, to which Goethe was an early and major contributor. Part I of the work outlines a pact Faust makes with the devil, Mephistopheles, and encompasses the tragedy of Gretchen, whom Faust seduces.

Grating Performance
Revisado: 01-12-25
I had to quit in the second part. The narrator’s natural voice is nice, but every single characters has the tremulous affect of a person in their 80s. There is also some atrocious piping noise behind much of the second part that I assume is for effect, but is really just a piercing drone that made it impossible to continue listening.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

The rare book I gave up on halfway through.
Revisado: 11-13-24
Tedious and plodding. The world resembles a dystopic future, but the details are incongruous (money has value and people go to college, but walking outside your neighborhood will see you raped and murdered?) This is probably deep if you don’t read real books or have never had an original thought. So, probably great for most folks.
