Historia
Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

Spooky Season Read
Revisado: 04-03-25
Actual Rating: 3.5 stars
This has a great premise and was overall a good read, but I think I felt underwhelmed by a couple of the reveals. Still, it would be a good story for spooky season.
Minor gripe here… in a letter by a dad talking to his adult daughter, why did he feel the need to not only explain that when he and her mother “needed time away” it meant they were going to have sex but also clarify that it happened multiple times in one night? Unnecessary and weird.

Amazing!
Revisado: 03-06-25
After loving the first book, I was nervous that this one was going to be a letdown in comparison. I’m so glad I was wrong! The tension and pining between Gideon and Rune, the adventure, the twists and turns—this was an incredible journey, and I’m so happy with how the duology wrapped up.

Scarlett Vandermeer is swimming upstream. A Junior at Stanford and a student-athlete who specializes in platform diving, Scarlett prefers to keep her head down, concentrating on getting into med school and on recovering from the injury. She has no time for relationships. Swim captain, world champion, all-around aquatics golden boy Lukas Blomqvist thrives on discipline. It’s how he wins gold medals and breaks records: complete focus, with every stroke. On the surface, Lukas and Scarlett have nothing in common. Until a well-guarded secret slips out, and everything changes.

Good
Revisado: 02-14-25
I liked getting insight into competitive diving. The pacing was off partway through, but the chemistry between Scarlett and Lukas was good. I also appreciated the supportive female friendship and the real apologies given when necessary.

Insanity

I struggled with the pacing through a good portion of this book, but there were still a lot of great moments and worldbuilding. And that ending? Insanity. We need the next book ASAP.

Quinn Norton is starting over at a new high school and hopes that joining a D&D game will be the trick to making friends. The plan sounds even better when she’s invited into a group that includes Logan Weber, the cute and charming guy she met on her first day of class. But this isn’t your average D&D campaign—this group livestreams their games and enforces strict rules: no phones allowed, and no dating other group members.

So cute! This one focuses more on Dungeons and Dragons than the previous one. I appreciated how much importance was given to friendship in this one. And the tiny nod to the previous book was fun.

Historia
Living in a year around Christmas town has its drawbacks. The caroling, the decorations, the insanely cheery spirit, it never disappears. It's why I like to hibernate away in my cave - I mean housekeeping a healthy distance from the holly jolly spirits. And all was going according to plan until my nemesis, Storee Taylor, moved in next door to care for her Aunt Cindy. Without blinking, she turned my simple world into a real nightmare-before-Christmas, especially when she decided to enter the town Christmas Kringle contest - which she was determined to win.

Eh
Revisado: 12-24-24
I’m going to agree with a lot of reviews that I saw for this book: it did not need to be almost 500 pages. There were bits of genuinely cute and sweet moments, although they tended to be bogged down by awkward sexual humor. The fourth wall breaking was annoying to me overall, but there were some amusing nods to How the Grinch Stole Christmas in them, as well as sprinkled throughout the book, like the title suggests.
Minor spoilers: The last (approximately) 50 pages were a lot, with the final conflict suddenly being thrown in that causes the couple to question everything (despite having been decent at communicating for the past 150ish pages). Said conflict is resolved quickly within a chapter or two, making it feel very last-minute and unnecessary. The original focus of the book is left to be wrapped up in one sentence in the epilogue.
If you’re looking for a holiday-infused story with a simple plot and the focus way more on spice than romance, this may be for you (after you make it over halfway through the book).
For audiobook readers: the cast was fine, it was the writing that was very awkward to me.

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

Decent Sequel
Revisado: 11-05-24
I loved the first book, so I was excited to dive into this one. While I did like it, the pacing was off in a handful of parts, feeling like it was more focused on setup for the next book, but the ending was just as intense as I expected. I plan on reading the final part of the trilogy when it releases.
(I listened to the audiobook, and while the narrator did well overall, some of her voices—namely Lore’s—irritated me at first, but I was okay with it by the end.)

Great Read!
Revisado: 10-17-24
That slower-paced plot really ramped up in the last section! If you like unique magic systems and grimdark fantasy settings, I highly recommend this one. (Also, I love Ravyn and Elspeth). My only complaint is super minor: they use “trees” as a curse word a handful of times. I couldn’t take it seriously, but it made sense why they say it in their world.
Can’t wait to dive into the sequel!
