This is my favorite book of hers. The narrator did a great job bringing all the characters to life and describing the battle. I am thrilled that this is now part of my library - I will listen to it frequently. Thank you, to all who produced this wonderful audiobook.

What an awesome book!
Revisado: 07-09-23
I loved this book, and the author read it as if he was telling us stories - very natural and flowing, not plodding though the text. I will probably get the printed version so I can highlight stuff - quotes, the author’s own wonderful prose, the profound ideas and histories all work perfectly within the “review” structure. Will definitely recommend to anyone who’ll listen, and I will certainly listen over and over to this wonderful collection of investigations/ruminations on our age.

Historia
In May 2016, Fort McMurray, the hub of Canada’s oil industry and America’s biggest foreign supplier, was overrun by wildfire. The multi-billion-dollar disaster melted vehicles, turned entire neighborhoods into firebombs, and drove 88,000 people from their homes in a single afternoon. Through the lens of this apocalyptic conflagration—the wildfire equivalent of Hurricane Katrina—John Vaillant warns that this was not a unique event, but a shocking preview of what we must prepare for in a hotter, more flammable world.

Fantastic
Revisado: 06-24-23
This book went far beyond my expectations, and the narrator was excellent. I have read many books about wildfire, from Norman Maclean’s Young Men and Fire to Stephen Pyne’s Pyrocene, and in my opinion this ranks among the best. The author wonderfully combined people’s experiences with history and science (and some history of science) to produce a complete, rounded account of the fire. Thank you for this excellent book!

Historia
Everyone in my family has killed someone. Some of us, the high achievers, have killed more than once. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but it is the truth. Some of us are good, others are bad, and some just unfortunate. I’m Ernest Cunningham. Call me Ern or Ernie. I wish I’d killed whoever decided our family reunion should be at a ski resort, but it’s a little more complicated than that.

Historia
The Pyrocene tells the story of what happened when a fire-wielding species, humanity, met an especially fire-receptive time in Earth's history. Since terrestrial life first appeared, flames have flourished. Over the past two million years, however, one genus gained the ability to manipulate fire, swiftly remaking both itself and eventually the world. We developed small guts and big heads by cooking food; we climbed the food chain by cooking landscapes; and now we have become a geologic force by cooking the planet.

A good history masked by a poor narrator
Revisado: 09-15-22
The book was really interesting but I could not finish the book because of the narrator. Between exemplifying the habit of dropping final syllables, and the deep pause before tackling any non-anglicized name, made listening a chore, and I am regretfully returning the book. However, I’m looking forward to listening to other books by this author.

Historia
He stared at the unfamiliar watch on his wrist. Three hours ago, he had stood on English soil. Three hours ago, he had been Martin Hearne, British Intelligence agent. Now he was in Nazi-occupied Brittany, posing as Bertrand Corlay, with the Frenchman’s life reduced to headings in his memory. Hearne looked down at the faded uniform, which had once been Corlay’s, felt once more for the papers in the inside pocket. He was ready. From now on, he was one step away from death.

Better than I expected
Revisado: 12-29-21
This was the first book I’ve read by this author. A few times I considered stopping and returning it - it was hard to actually care about the characters at first, but watching the author develop the characters over the course of the book was really rewarding. And of course as the reader I was always questioning what I “knew”, and what the characters knew, or thought they knew. In all a very good book and an excellent performance of it! And lots to think about as well.
