If you only read one Christian book outside the Bible let it be this one. What a beautiful picture of what Our Lord has done and what glory He wants for us!

It’s not the norm to question one’s beliefs and ask the question “why” do we do what we do. Frank Viola does just that and the answers are just what you wouldn’t want to hear. If you are thinking about why the church seems off this book will answer that question. If you think that there should be more than what we commonly see in mainstream Christianity then you will find the reason why. If you are wanting to be challenged to go beyond your current comfort zone and embrace a more biblical approach to church then this book will point you in the right direction!

I thought the book was good overall. It was a little preachy at times and felt like some of the book was structured as an apologetic argument to help Christians talk to their Muslim friends about the Bible and their faith. It was a good read and it gave good insight into what Muslims go through when questioning their faith. I really enjoyed the parts of the book that talked about the author’s life and how he struggled with his own thoughts and beliefs. The parts about his dreams were especially interesting I think the emotional aspect of his story really came through in those parts. I’d recommend it to anyone interested in understanding their Muslim friends and wanting to be able to talk more effectively to them about faith.

Dan makes the point well that the main action and focus of the church should be making disciples that reproduce. It’s clear that the church in the US is failing in this regard and Dan offers a helpful and motivating perspective on what can be done to turn the ship around.

Not what I expected. I was expecting a call to a self-sacrificing return to scripture with a pure heart and desire for connection with Jesus that leads to transforming the church in America. (The review I wish I could have written) Unfortunately what I got was more like a political message. Perhaps I missed the point but, to me this book feels like an attempt to support the blending of Christian theology with the policy of the political left. I don’t see this book accomplishing its stated purpose or goal. I was thinking this book would be more like “Letters to the Church” by Francis Chan but sadly it was not.

Great collection of thoughtful and thought provoking addresses. I have listened to some of these in other collections and find new tidbits or “Joy” each time I hear them again.

“Be transformed by renewing your minds that you may be able to test and approve what the will of God is…” But how? How am I to be transformed into the image of Christ? There is much preached about transformed lives in Christ but most professing Christians experience and see very little change if any. How can this be? Willard explains in great detail how the Spirit or the heart of man is formed and how it can be reformed in the likeness of Christ. This is not a light read, it is not for the uncommitted or like warm this book if for the serious believer longing for transformation from the inside out.

Best book on parenting I’ve read in a long time!

This book addresses many of the struggles parents face with their kids and confronts these problems with principles of child development rather than opinions based on “one-size-fits-all” strategies. I was challenged to re-evaluate my approach to parenting, especially correcting my kids. Though I don’t agree with every detail of the approaches set forth as examples in the book, I do believe I have come away with a much more healthy approach of my own. I believe the authors of this book would encourage that type of response from the way they spoke in principles rather than writing out detailed “magical scripts and phrases” that would somehow trigger perfect children with perfect behavior.

The book is hard to read at times because it does challenge a lot of traditional American parenting patterns. If you take the advice given and spend the time to evaluate your own experience as a child and how your parents raised you I believe it is easier to swallow their bitter medicine at times. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any parents out there looking to do their best and willing to evaluate and correct their own actions as parents.

I have not heard a stance on parenting and family this refreshing in a long time! Love the team approach and making the old ways new again. I’m looking forward to taking back my own family!
