Historia
Compiled by intrepid journalist Neve Pride, this archive of recordings spans the months after dragons emerged on earth, chronicling the communities that sprang up amid the destruction, the scientists, military leaders, and experts searching for a defense, and those steadfastly seeking the missing. Neve and her young daughter Bex travel among the wreckage speaking to those left behind and surviving, against all odds. Neve records everything for history, and in the hopes of locating a clue as to where the dragons came from and how one might stop them.

This is a super story!
Revisado: 04-04-25
I loved the format of this story — a ‘retelling’ of events through interviews with impacted people. It was a great way to tell multiple stories while also carrying the listener through ‘real-time’ events.
Overall I found this to be so engaging. I listened to it every opportunity I had from the time I downloaded it! Such great talent assembled to tell a fantasy tale set in the here and now, rather than a fantasy world. The concept allowed for great characters and action bc basic world building wasn’t needed. We, like the characters, learn about the evolution of the events as they unfold.
This had all the excitement of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ in a tale written for grown-ups!

Historia
At rock bottom following her daughter’s death, ex-Chicago detective Carrie Starr has nowhere to go but back to her roots. Starr’s father never talked much about the reservation where he was raised, but the tribe needs a new marshal as much as Starr needs a place to call home. In the past decade, too many young women have disappeared from the rez. Some have ended up dead, others just…gone. Now local college student Chenoa Cloud is missing, and Starr falls into an investigation that leaves her drowning in memories of her daughter—the girl she failed to save.

She ran away and began to find her place
Revisado: 02-28-25
It’s hard to pick just the right words to summarize this experience. The story was so good — it kept things moving and had enough character development of a handful of characters, that it was a surprise at the end.
The concept of finding where we belong is something a lot of people can relate to, but this tale of a woman with an indigenous heritage she is aware of but did not live, told by a woman with a similar background, was very powerful. Starr is flawed but we walk alongside her as she tries to get to know the locals on the reservation she’s contracted to serve as Marshall. The story invites us to understand the parental pain of more than one character.
This is a beautifully written story, rich and descriptive in both setting the scene and the emotion of the tale. The narration is well done, and I was hanging on every word.

Great story
Revisado: 11-04-24
The story telling and performance of this book are excellent, though it could have been better edited to cut cliches. Hahn weaves intriguing tales that are really enjoyable to listen to, so I’m off to book three!

Historia
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

A heartbreaking insight to a teen’s view of life in the system
Revisado: 08-15-22
This looked like a ‘must read’ after I read an essay by Nietfeld. I listened to parts of this book while remodeling a former group foster home, already angry at the poor condition of a house that was supposed to provide safety and comfort to youth in the system. This book is heartbreaking and insightful. It helps give a better understanding to the roadblocks encountered, and emotions felt, by teens as they try to navigate the complicated bureaucracies designed to provide help. Far too many youth are traumatized in some way by these systems and Nietfeld’s narrative walks readers through the various ways and places this can happen. While the outcome of her professional life looks great on paper, this book helps us understand the nuances of pain and trauma underneath. I fear there are too many similar stories, of youth who love their parents but cannot live with them and cannot get all the assistance needed to support them to adulthood. I appreciated this bold story and the effort I imagine it took to tell it to the whole world.

"Where you staying?" the Bedouin asked. "Why you not stay with me tonight - in my cave?" Thus begins Marguerite van Geldermalsen's story of how a New Zealand-born nurse came to be married to Mohammad Abdallah Othman, a Bedouin souvenir-seller from the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. It was 1978, and she and a friend were travelling through the Middle East when Marguerite met the charismatic Mohammad who convinced her that he was the man for her.

An interesting tale of adopting a new culture
Revisado: 07-20-22
This book is great for travelers or those interested in hearing about daily life in other cultures. This book was advertised in several places in Petra when we visited. It is a great narrative of adjusting to life among the Bedouin people. The stories make it easy to envision the area and the people there.
