apparently all nerds are boys obsessed with boobs
Revisado: 09-15-14
It's got some really good parts, some brilliant ideas, and some fun and interesting things to say but...
The author constantly talks as though he is talking directly to straight guys and assumes getting the girl is a common desire for everybody reading.
It's distracting and kinda awful.
I will however say it happens a lot less often than in other "nerd" based self help books I've impulse bought during sales.
It's not so often as to make me want to stop the book all together, so I forget that it's even a thing that happens. Then it happens again like a slap in the face.
A consistent reminder that some men think of women things you get for being awesome enough, and the men who think that way will really like this book.

Grant to Steve Jobs - a formula that let them turn obstacles into opportunities. Faced with impossible situations, they found the astounding triumphs we all seek.

paranoid author
Revisado: 07-20-14
author seems convinced that the world is out to get him.
he lives in a world of kill or be killed.
perfectly calm and reasonable advice such as "don't freak out" turns into "don't freak out OR YOUR ENEMIES WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR WEAKNESS AND OVERPOWER YOU! YOU MUST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR WEAKNESS! THEY ARE THE WEAK ONES! and that's why you should stay calm"
alright the capslock is taking things a bit far,
but honestly, that's the message.
I work really hard on cultivating love and acceptance. I don't need it undermined from a book that pretends to be about helping me.

Everyone knows confidence when they see it; but seemingly no one can actually describe what goes into it or how to get it. The Nerd's Guide to Being Confident is an unconventional way of looking at one of the most basic and obvious human traits and what one can do to gain a little more of it without feeling like a phony. Laughter included.

talks about women the same way most people would talk about dogs.
ya know, act a certain way to gain their trust
be commanding and then they'll respect you
punish bad behavior by withholding affection
it's all very dehumanizing.
I gave up at the point he claimed a friends exgirlfriend "faked a rape story to create drama"

Meg's father had been experimenting with time travel when he suddenly disappeared. Brilliant
Revisado: 10-06-13
I was recommended the book by a friend after I said how much I enjoyed Narnia.
A bit heavy handed with it's christian metaphors, and I could have done without the "perfect guy falling in love with the quirky protagonist with low self esteem" but that doesn't intrude much, if at all, with what's amazing about the story.
All the characters are amazing
The worlds are amazing
The truths and metaphors are amazing
The lessons are amazing.
Loved it.

made the pain worse
Revisado: 11-04-12
between every moment all I could think was AAAAAAHHHH HOLY FUKINNNN AAAAHHHH THIS FORKINNN HURTS! OH GOD KILL ME! and the pain was definitely worse when listening to this book than at any other time. It felt like all this attention to the pain was holding a magnifying glass up to the pain
Seriously
one of the first instructions was to bring your minds eye to the pain.
Who the hell does that without numbing or strengthing the body first?
I know this kind of pain can be treated with hypnotism, but not with this book.
Maybe it's better if you only have a minor ache.
Shame the book wasn't called "Meditation for minor ache relief"
so I am going to call it ineffective.
VERY ineffective.

Stein on Writing provides immediately useful advice for writers of fiction and nonfiction, whether newcomers or accomplished professionals. As Sol Stein, renowned editor, author, and instructor, explains, "This is not a book of theory. It is a book of usable solutions, how to fix writing that is flawed, how to improve writing that is good, how to create interesting writing in the first place."

Annoying bigoted old man can't get to the point
Revisado: 10-28-12
"nobody likes ordinary people, they are boring"
"think of the sexiest woman you know, now think of her bald, not so sexy now is she"
STFU
I want writing tips, not tips on how to reject everything that isn't mainstream.
Yes there are genuinely good writing tips in here, but they are each buried under half an hour to an hour of boring bs examples and waffle.
This book written by and editor SURE AS HELL NEEDS AND EDITOR!
The irony of that and reading a book discussing how to make your characters more likeable while finding the narrator deeply unpleasant wasn't lost on me.
I got through two and a half hours of this and I want a damn medal.

In this terrifying and hilarious prequel, we witness the genesis of the zombie plague in early 19th-century England. We watch Elizabeth Bennet evolve from a nave young teenager into a savage slayer of the undead. We laugh as she begins her first clumsy training with nunchucks and katana swords and cry when her first blush with romance goes tragically awry.

Fantastic Narrator for a Fun Story!

Clearly the best thing I've ever heard.
Revisado: 03-17-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It's glorious.
What did you like best about this story?
EVERYTHING! The strong female lead roles that still maintain their essential softness and stay true to the characters. The chance to see characters I love so much kick zombie ass. Every minute was glorious and wonderful. Not a single scene was dull.
What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The accent is a lot like one me and my friends would put on when telling made up stories to each other so it added a lot to my personal experience of the book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I stayed up until 4am listening to the book. The next morning/lunch time I slept through three phone calls from the boy I was supposed to be having a date with, the sound of the ringing tone working its way into the narrative of my dream as I try to work out which zombie I need to slice in half to answer the call.
Any additional comments?
I love this book and will send myself broke listening to the series.

Historia
Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten. The Fault in Our Stars is insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw. It brilliantly explores the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.
