Tried, but just couldn't finish. Everyone knows a person that starts to explain something, but includes 20 tangents in the telling. That is this book.

an amazing unknown hero
Revisado: 07-27-17
The story seemed like fiction. Once again, I found that a story recounting the life of a real and modest hero reminded me of the struggle between good and evil within the same person. The struggle we all encounter.
The story and performance kept me riveted and made me envision every incident described. I appreciate the way the author recognized the inner struggles of the main character instead of glorifying him. it was a wonderful tribute!

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

realistic war story
Revisado: 01-10-16
This is one of the few fiction books I have read about WWII where I had to remind myself this was not non fiction. The book portrays the real choices that women in war torn France had to make. it is wellwell written and the narrator is superb.

The author draws the reader into the story and the setting. I swear I could see the men, their exhaustion, and their worries. That's the kind of book I like: one that makes me feel I've lived the story.

Historia
Anna Benz, an American in her late thirties, lives with her Swiss husband, Bruno—a banker—and their three young children in a postcard-perfect suburb of Zürich. Though she leads a comfortable, well-appointed life, Anna is falling apart inside. Adrift and increasingly unable to connect with the emotionally unavailable Bruno or even with her own thoughts and feelings, Anna tries to rouse herself with new experiences: German language classes, Jungian analysis, and a series of sexual affairs she enters with an ease that surprises even her.

Excellent book exploring the human condition. The author's use of words captured my attention from start to finish. While I am totally different than the main character, I could understand her choices because the author made me feel I understood her and could imagine myself as her.

Almost didn't finish because of narrator
Revisado: 07-13-14
Any additional comments?
The story is very well written and respective of the victims. Including comparisons to today's world helps us to understand how much the world has changed and how powerless victims were to tell their story in the 1920s. Sanford was an amazing young man and even more amazing adult to overcome the horrific abuse experienced during his captivity.
The narration was too theatrical and quite distracting from the story. I nearly stopped listening after the first chapter, but glad I stayed with it as the story was written so well.

Interesting & entertaining presentation
Revisado: 07-01-14
Any additional comments?
I've read many books on King Henry VIII, but the concept of an autobiography was intriguing and not disappointing. The narrator's tone and inflection added greatly to the story by matching historical descriptions of the King's demeanor. Although it is a fictional book based upon historical facts, it quickly became easy to forget that and believe that King Henry VIII had actually left the manuscript for us to find after his death.
