Historia
Grunt tackles the science behind some of a soldier's most challenging adversaries - panic, exhaustion, heat, noise - and introduces us to the scientists who seek to conquer them. Mary Roach dodges hostile fire with the U.S. Marine Corps Paintball Team as part of a study on hearing loss and survivability in combat. She visits the fashion design studio of U.S. Army Natick Labs and learns why a zipper is a problem for a sniper.

Forcing the ethical questions out...for science
Revisado: 10-11-16
What did you like best about Grunt? What did you like least?
Grunt tells the interesting, complex, and often grisly tales of the human body at war. However, I was upset to hear (Although to the author's credit she is very upfront about it) that there wasn't going to be much in the way of philosophical or ethical discussion about the issues, simply the science. The stone cold facts. While this is great, and certainly each chapter could stand alone as an article, I feel like cutting out the moral end of the story by not asking "why do we spend so much money, time, effort, and intellect trying to dehumanize ourselves to make us better at war?" does the overall book a disservice. The book doesn't have to be about this, but I felt the absence of those larger questions the whole time; every time one of her interviewees steered too close to that topic, everything was quickly whisked away back into the realm of the clinical.

Historia
In 1920, in small-town America, the ubiquitous dry goods store was usually owned by Jews and often referred to as "the Jew store". That's how Stella Suberman's father's store, Bronson's Low-Priced Store, in Concordia, Tennessee, was known locally. The Bronsons were the first Jews to ever live in that tiny town of one main street, one bank, one drugstore, one picture show, one feed and seed, one hardware, one barber shop, one beauty parlor, one blacksmith, and many Christian churches.

Interesting Case Study
Revisado: 10-11-16
What made the experience of listening to The Jew Store the most enjoyable?
The nature of living in the south and of being Jewish comes into focus because of the tensions and conflicts. The little details, the elements of daily life so easily forgotten one hundred years later, made the story come to life.
Which character – as performed by Donna Postel – was your favorite?
None stood out; all of the characters fit well within the cohesive whole.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I had to take breaks from it. Not because the voice acting wasn't good (overall I thought Donna Postel did a tremendous job) but because the story felt too much like a nostalgic re-creation. There wasn't much reflection mixed in with the childhood memories to really give the story bite.
