It took me a while to get used to 2 narrators and clips of Lisa Marie’s voice and the lack of a linear story. But then I let go and realized…our memories aren’t linear. When we recount the past with a friend, we jump back and forth through time.
My parents’ song was “Loving You.” My children grew up listening to the Elvis Station on Sirius XM. And though I’m a lifelong Elvis fan and followed stories of his life, I hadn’t heard Lisa Marie’s side of the story. And I am not familiar with Riley at all. (This dates me.) But I remember looking at a picture of Lisa Marie with Elvis when I was a little girl, and with my innocence thinking how lucky she was. Well, life is a struggle for all of us. No matter what. This memoir did exactly what she wanted…I saw a bit of my own experience…a mother who thought she should be different rung true. A deep, enduring sadness at the loss of a father you loved, also rung true.
I will listen to these talented women present this memoir again. But right now, I’m still crying.

The manner in which these essays are read does not truly emphasize the form: essays.

If you, like me, fell in love with Sontag’s work because of On Photography, do not go back and listen to these essays.
I felt like I was at a literary conference. And since she admits she even doesn’t agree with everything she wrote, and these essays are now 60 years old, the only way you should encounter this book is in text form if you are in a literary criticism class writing a paper summarizing criticism of criticism.
Also… the manner in which these essays are read does not emphasize the form: essay. It’s almost jarring to hear the narrator pronounce French authors or Italian authors as if she has no accent at all.
We all know Sontag is revered, and deservedly so, but as someone now retired, revisiting old haunts or selections I might have missed over the years, I was dissatisfied.

The author weaves the story of Didion’s life with the pioneers who crossed the country and settled California, of what matters and what we leave behind.
In the end, Didion belongs to the Literary canon. She writes the particular to connect with the universal. And this autobiography makes that stunningly clear.
Didion’s lifestyle is not judged. It’s presented as matter of fact. But one can’t imagine Didion’s writing coming from any other life than the one she lived. She is presented as both part of and apart from a time, from a community.
I, for one, was struck by the “jokes” about others name-dropping, when this whole biography is page after page of name-dropping. I had no idea her web of connections was so vast.
It isn’t an easy listen. I found myself having to take days off to recover from the weight of this masterful account. It’s a much longer listen than an average book. At first, I had to slow down the pace of the narrator to sink into the world of the book. But about half way through, I went back to standard speed.
The narrator made me feel like I was hearing the voice of the author. Soothing. Calming. True.

Great story, but it is so painful with this narrator. Can't even pronounce certain words. Know what you're talking about before saying the word.

This is a joke! The narration was awful and his advice is an even bigger joke. Total waste of money.
