Historia
When Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017―rendering the ancient poem in contemporary language that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)―critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time.

Simply wonderful
Revisado: 12-21-23
This was my first time with the Iliad. I don’t know what I was expecting but this was great to listen to. I can’t speak to the accuratesy of the translation, however, the word flowed marvelously. Audra McDonald did an excellent job with the Greek pronunciation, tempo and emotion of the piece.

The best yet
Revisado: 10-12-23
This one had me puzzled until the end. There are villains, good folks and some a blend of both.
The narration is also excellent as usual.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Slow slow slow

I’m 50% thru the book and I don’t feel involved with the story, Isla or any of the characters.
The performance is top notch. The story is simply taking too long to get going.

Historia
Each Tudor monarch made their name with a Dudley by their side—or by crushing one beneath their feet. The Dudleys thrived at the court of Henry VII but were sacrificed to the popularity of Henry VIII. Rising to prominence in the reign of Edward VI, the Dudleys lost it all by advancing Jane Grey to the throne over Mary I. That was until the reign of Elizabeth I, when the family was once again at the center of power and would do anything to remain there . . . With three generations of felled favorites, what was it that caused this family to keep rising so high and falling so low?

A good find
Revisado: 05-26-23
Everyone likes Tudor history.
I had heard of Robert Dudley as a suitor to QE1, but I was completely ignorant of the Dudley dynasty that rose and sometimes stumbled with the Tudors.
A fascinating history from the point of view of a family who were closely intertwined with the Tudors.

Historia
The seventeenth century was a revolutionary age for the English. It started as they suddenly found themselves ruled by a Scotsman, and it ended in the shadow of an invasion by the Dutch. Under James I, England suffered terrorism and witch panics. Under his son Charles, state and society collapsed into civil war, to be followed by an army coup and regicide. For a short time—for the only time in history—England was a republic. There were bitter struggles over faith and Parliament asserted itself like never before. There were no boundaries to politics.

Can’t overstate how much I enjoyed this book
Revisado: 05-04-23
I have been reading a lot recently about the English Civil Wars. This book covers the wars again but bookends the lead up and consequences.
The book is well researched and well written. There were details presented, particularly regarding public sentiment that I had not heard before.
The book is simple the best thing I have read for some years.

When Napoleon decided to invade Russia in 1812, it became the event that would lead to his downfall. Setting off on his invasion on June 24th with a force numbering about 600,000–the largest army ever gathered up to that time–the military operation ended six months later with the last French soldiers stumbling out of Russia in total defeat.

This is an old book
Revisado: 03-21-23
It’s not mentioned in the blurb here, but the book was authored in 1899. So, the publication date of 2023 is a little misleading.
Moving on, how was the book? (I mean, The Odyssey is 2,000+ years and it is a good yarn.)
I was born in Britain a long time ago and the description of Napoleon given in the book is very much of the old Brit view of Napoleon. Napoleon was despicable, a war monger who was also untrustworthy and a megalomaniac. I think Napoleon is now viewed with more nuance and through different lenses. The book is completely nuance free.
I gave up after 90 minutes. Even though the book played in to the Napoleon stereotypes I grew up with, I couldn’t take it any more.
Go elsewhere for your Napoleonic history.

There was a lot to enjoy in this novel. Learning more about Medusa’s story was fascinating and the depiction of Perseus and Athene was well observed and beautifully read.

Uneven but unsettling
Revisado: 03-05-23
First off, kudos to all the voice actors. Their performances we’re really really good and added to my enjoyment of the book.
The book is certainly over along and uneven put it is important to remember that this is a work of fiction and not a documentary.
Reviews that call the book woke are, I think, very wrong. It it is the story of people striving for a future society different in the one we live in today. It is a society that I would love to live in.
If you don’t want to live in that kind of society, you will find the book woke. If you do, the book is definitely worth your time.
