The story is so real and told so clearly. Despite the difficult journey, there is no doubt that the characters are treated with care, as people. This is a must read!

The other reviews I saw on here don’t do this little collection justice. I enjoyed this quite a lot. I loved the micro nature of the stories, like miniature paintings including as much story and world-building as possible on the smallest canvas. Some of the stories made me laugh out loud, some made me think deeper. I like how it felt like a journal of ideas and how you can see Atwood as a master of her craft testing these ideas and how much life they have, and these were better off this way. The 2 short Hamlet-inspired stories went well with my Hamlet readathon, which is way this book ended up on my radar. You will enjoy this book if you aren’t looking for every short story to be an itty bitty Handmade’s Tale.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The writing is incredible—insightful, caring, while being able to create outstanding impact in the characters and through the setting. I recommend doing a quick watch or reread of Hamlet if it’s been awhile.

I loved the narrative style. The first person perspective allowed Hamad to weave the story as tapestry in the moment and in the mind of the narrator, going seamlessly through the present time to memories.

I can’t believe this book hasn’t gotten more press, though I fear it’s due to this being a powerful Palestinian story in the context of apartheid. It is able to tackle and address so much nuance quickly, it’s impressive.

The book does delicate work of creating a strong sense of place on both sides of the wall, giving characters room to develop and grow, and exploring powerful themes of art and resistance, family and trauma, and grief and loss. Hamlet is used not only in plot but also as a tool in foreshadowing and metaphor.

I started bawling at the last line: one of the most powerful endings I’ve read.

I reread TAOTS and TAOHF before reading James, which helped me appreciate this book even more. Everett’s writing echoes and adds to the wit of Twain by giving depth to the character of Jim (James) and not sugarcoating the context of the dark reality of slavery. I don’t think young people should read Twain’s’ books without following with this today.

Was really hopeful that this would deliver on the excitement, suspense, and plot driving of the first books—didn’t deliver at all

Also, the change to the reader of Eva was so distracting
