Lost interest
Revisado: 10-03-24
The writing is fine and performances were excellent but the characters were very dull to me and I just lost interest in the lost bookshop. I kept going confused between Opaline and Martha. Other then the accents of the narrators they seemed very similar so it a was hard to remember which time line I was reading and which guy was the romantic interest.

Like a Hallmark movie without Christmas
Revisado: 09-01-24
This book was pleasant enough but the writing was a bit overwrought and it wasn’t helped by the narrator’s overly dramatic reading. It felt at times like a self-help book for people getting divorces, dealing with grief or overcoming addiction

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

A boring subject.
Revisado: 05-27-24
Larsen’s wokeness is showing. Seems like the only reason he wrote this book was to berate the south for slavery, a familiar trope. The deadpan narration didn’t liven things up much.

Historia
Cameron Winter was born with the ability to recreate detailed crime scenes in his imagination and dissect the motives and encounters that produced them. And after reading a puzzling news story about a wealthy family killed in a small town in the Chicago suburbs, he can't resist the chance to apply this deductive power in the pursuit of justice for the victims. Three members of the family, along with their live-in nanny, were pulled from their burning mansion, already dead from gunshot wounds. The only survivor is a young boy whose memory of the event raises more questions than answers.

Gripping
Revisado: 10-09-23
This book has it all—fast-paced compelling story, fascinating history, and a great reader. Thoroughly enjoyable and informative. I lived near Saratoga most of my life and never knew what an incredible battle had been fought there. Not that Arnold was the hero. His story is quite tragic, but this book is a winner.

Chadwick, Scott, and William Marshall are a perfect combination in this engrossing tale of knights and chivalry. This is my favorite period of English medieval history and Chadwick captures it to a tee. The narration could not have been better.

The narrator brought the book to life
Revisado: 09-26-20
I'm so glad I listened to rather than read this book -- the narrator Richard Allen was superb, with beautiful diction and ability to do all the different accents of the period with ease. He really brought the book to life for me. It was engaging from beginning to end. Once you get used to the style of writing, this book feels fresh and modern, even a century and a half after it was written.

Historia
The Spanish House is a mixture of designs, Georgian, Gothic and Moorish, as if whoever started it had simply got bored. It has long been known as an architectural folly to locals, and is now nearly derelict to boot. When its reclusive owner dies intestate, the Spanish House is left to his city-dwelling niece. For Isabel, recently widowed, the house is a potential lifeline - the only hope she has of providing for her two children without having to sell her most treasured possession.

Predictable
Revisado: 11-25-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I usually get the audio versions of Moyes books because the narrators are so good. But the books have begun to drag. There is way too much repetition and characters ruminating about their situations rather than moving the plot forward. Not a lot of depth in the characters, though there is in this book the quirky "town folk" that give the story a bit of color. Moyes is a good writer, but she repeats herself too much. This is the 4th Moyes book I've listened to; they all start to run together.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jojo Moyes? Why or why not?
I probably will, because it's easy to listen to and the narrators are good. My main motivation is not falling asleep on long drives.
Which character – as performed by Clare Corbett – was your favorite?
The two gay guys
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No

Good but too long
Revisado: 08-25-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I recommend all Moyes' books to friends. They are well-written, romantic and very well-performed. Though I found this book, like Ship of Brides, to be overlong, especially in the first several chapters, Moyes does her homework and builds suspense very credibly. The readers are excellent.

Fun listen
Revisado: 08-25-14
What did you love best about Loki's Daughters?
This was an easy, entertaining listen. The reader is very, shall we say, enthusiastic, and keeps the somewhat predictable story moving. Pretty standard romance, but very well-written, with some interesting historical detail thrown in.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Loki's Daughters?
Jacobs writes a pretty evocative sex scene :)
What does Sarah Coomes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She's a terrific reader and can switch seamlessly from British to Scandinavian accents very convincingly. Listening was far more enjoyable than reading.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Lots of sighing.
