Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Great story, a bit hard to follow as an audio book
Revisado: 04-18-19
I think it would work better on paper. The beginning was particularly confusing as characters are established. Still worth it - a wonderful yarn, a cautionary tale, a reminder that women can be marvelously capable sociopaths too.

This is a true story of effective anti-hero work. A fascinating portrait of America adjusting to life after the civil rights movement through the lens of a police officer. Well told.

Great beginning, great twist, falls apart a bit
Revisado: 08-23-18
Entertaining, but wraps up too neatly. Turns from thriller to melodrama at the end. What started off as plausible became overly sentimental. No issues with the narration, but I wasn't wowed. If you go in knowing this is a romantic drama rather than a thriller, you may enjoy it more.

Historia
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Self help book with an empowerment twist
Revisado: 08-06-18
I can't rate this book as highly as I would were I not religious. Sincero's outlook ultimately conflicts with my religious beliefs. While I enjoy much of what she has to say, it just doesn't work well for anyone with a traditional monotheistic upbringing. For listeners who do not have that particular barrier, Sincero's narration falls a bit flat, so listen to the sample before you buy to see if you are ok with it. Otherwise, paperback might be a better choice.

Esther Ann Hicks - Essie - is the youngest child on Six for Hicks, a reality television phenomenon. She's grown up in the spotlight, both idolized and despised for her family's fire-and-brimstone brand of faith. When Essie's mother, Celia, discovers that Essie is pregnant, she arranges an emergency meeting with the show's producers: Do they sneak Essie out of the country for an abortion? Do they pass the child off as Celia's? Or do they try to arrange a marriage - and a ratings-blockbuster wedding?

One of Weisberger's more charming offerings
Revisado: 08-06-18
Revisiting Emily from The Devil Wears Prada never disappoints. As one of the most original and memorable characters Weisberger has created, Emily knows how to show you a good time. That said, this story falls into a number of old traps for Weisberger. The will-they-won't-they cheating, the magic fixes only Miranda can provide, the secret sadnesses of the rich and lovely, the neat bow of an ending, etc. That said, this book made me feel as though Weisberger is finally hitting her stride. After weathering disasters like "Chasing Harry Winston", it's good to see the old sparkle come back. Finally, and perhaps most importantly for an audio book, the narration is excellent. A worthy investment of your listening time.

An exquisite reading of one of my favorite plays
Revisado: 06-11-18
A beautiful interpretation of one of LaBute's strongest pieces. Brutal, heart wrenching, revelatory, funny, too. While it is difficult to believe anyone would challenge Jenna Fischer's beauty, perhaps that is part of the point. The struggle with communication and desire for validation will make the insecure among us cringe, and the seemingly secure recognize pieces of themselves they wish they hadn't. Well done, LATW!

Historia
From Lauren Graham, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, comes a witty, charming, and hilariously relatable debut novel about a struggling young actress trying to get ahead - and keep it together - in New York City. It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing "important" work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club....

Lauren Graham is a heck of a narrator, and on her way to being a heck of a writer. I would call this "good" or "fun" rather than great, but I'm excited to read whatever's next for her. Little by little, Lauren!

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.
