Lives up to the hype
Revisado: 09-10-24
I kept having this come up in my feed and I avoided it-don't. Get it, read it, share it.
As a nurse and the daughter of a soldier this was an addictive and educational read, I lost more than a few hours of sleep staying up for "just a little more," and it was worth it.
WWII stories seem to be everywhere, many focusing on women but Vietnam was so different, this story needed to be told. You did it beautifully Ms. Hannah, thank you.

Historia
Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes best-selling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They’re polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

I love this book so much.
Revisado: 05-23-22
I've listened to this on Audible 3 or 4 times now. I really need to stop because once it gets going I stay up half the night getting through "just one more chapter."
As a writer I can really relate to January getting her life tangled up with her writer's block and inspiration, and later the high when the words start flowing. Her struggle to sort out her perception of the past with her not-so-perfect parents and with not-so-evil Gus is believable and a great character arc that drives the story forward. Gotta admit though, the steamy scenes are some of my favorites, so hot!
Gus is great and infuriating all at once, his back and forth, hard to read qualities seem so familiar I think I may have dated him myself once upon a time.
This is the romance novel that I hold all others up to and so far it always comes out on top.

Historia
Thirteen-year-old Boli and his friends are deep in the middle of a game of marbles. An older boy named Mosca has won the prized Devil's Fire marble. His pals are jealous and want to win it away from him. This is Izayoc, the place of tears, a small pueblo in a tiny valley west of Mexico City where nothing much happens. It's a typical hot Sunday morning except that on the way to church, someone discovers the severed head of Enrique Quintanilla propped on the ledge of one of the cement planters in the plaza, and everything changes.

brutal but true
Revisado: 04-30-22
I lived in Mexico for three years and felt like I was there again listening to this audio book. It was immersive and heartbreaking to follow the main character Boli as he struggles to understand what's happening to his hometown. The attitudes of the people, especially the luchadores, were sentiments I heard among my own friends in Mexico.
The Spanish words were a perfect balance, helping create the story without having to stop and think "what does that mean?"

something different
Revisado: 10-13-21
As a fan of the Percy Jackson series I think I went in expecting something similar. This is completely different, but still good.
I did get a little tired of the constant stress and drama in the narrator's voice. This book was more drama and less humor than his mythology series's and I missed the humor.
Having not read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea I didn't feel lost, I think we're all familiar enough with it to keep up with the story. The "what if it was real" aspect was a great approach, and it was an interesting introduction to the details for me. The characters were somewhat predictable, but still fun and engaging.
Overall I enjoyed the book and found myself listening every chance I could to see what happened next.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

WOW
Revisado: 09-20-20
I searched for this author because I loved the Dispatcher and chose this book because it was the most popular. It sure didn't disappoint.
The story was unique and fast paced, the narrator gave the characters relatability and personality even without a lot of descriptive details. I lost a lot of sleep seeing what happened next because I couldn't stop listening. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Before and after Pompeii visit
Revisado: 06-08-20
I listen to this book before we visited Pompeii in Italy and found it fascinating to learn more about the city. I recently listened to it again after we've been home for six months and was thrilled to realize I could picture places he described in the book after being there myself in the ruins. How could any story be more realistic than that?
The story is told from the POV of the Aquarius who is newly appointed to care for the aquaduct that's supplied all of the Bay of Naples. There are other true historical figures such as Pliney the Elder and bits of Roman culture sprinkled throughout, and I learned a lot about history and the architecture of the area.
Even though we all know what happens in the end I became invested in the characters and was on the edge of my seat until the end to see who lived and who died.

loved both the music and the story
Revisado: 10-03-19
This was a story about the magic music can create, so it only makes sense that there is actual music being played at key moments. As a former band kid and mother to a 7th grade flautist I loved hearing both familiar and new pieces. I found the characters easy to relate to and endearing, plus the humor of things like guessing her middle name kept things light
The story was predictable in some ways but still had enough twists to keep me surprised and very engaged. It's 3:30am as I write this because I couldn't stop listening until I got to the end!

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

The book is great but the narration really makes it. At times the science and one-sided conversations get a little tedious but the humor and authentic voice keeps it going.

Slow starter

The narration was good, but switching back and forth between the two stories was hard for me to get into. It was hard to keep going for the first third. At times the plot was slow, but overall I'm glad I finished it.
