Historia
Steeplechase jockey Derek Franklin has had more broken bones than he cares to count, but it seems his latest injury could very well bring his days on the race course to a screeching halt. But that’s the least of his concerns when his brother turns up dead, leaving Derek as the sole inheritor of his estate. It doesn’t take long for Derek to learn that his brother—a magistrate who imported and sold semiprecious stones—was keeping more than his share of secrets.

Historia
Ishmael Jones is someone who can't afford to be noticed, someone who lives under the radar, who drives on the dark side of the road. He's employed to search out secrets, investigate mysteries and shine a light in dark places. Invited by his employer, the enigmatic Colonel, to join him and his family for Christmas, Ishmael arrives at the grand but isolated Belcourt Manor in the midst of a blizzard to find that the Colonel has mysteriously disappeared. As he questions his fellow guests, Ishmael concludes that at least one of them - not least Ishmael himself - is harboring a dangerous secret.

Hard to finish
Revisado: 03-15-24
The book started out very well with a favorite narrator and some unusual interesting elements. It’s an English manor house locked room mystery with an interesting protagonist/narrator but Supernatural is not my kind of thing. Without this narrator, one of my favorites I would have returned it. The voice of Sylvia is just ridiculous though. Skipped through most of the last two chapters …hard to finish

Historia
Plain Heathen Mischief ups the existential ante, as Joel King, a defrocked Baptist minister, finds life even more bedeviling once he's served six months for a career-ending crime he might not even have committed. Now his incommunicado wife wants a divorce, the teenage vixen of his disgrace is suing him for a cool $5 million, a fresh start in Montana offers no hope for ex-cons of any religious persuasion, and the refuge provided by his sister turns as nasty as his parole officer. Talk about a crisis of faith.

The con is good but the religion is too much
Revisado: 09-21-23
Like another review I exited a romp in the usual style of the author. This is more of a Job and redemption and sports a fair amount of religion.
Characters and the cons on which the story is built are all interesting.
If you’re new to this author try a different title first.

Charming but not easy to finish
Revisado: 12-02-22
Excellent narration saves this book from being a real slog.
The story is mostly a light romance imbedded in a mystery treasure hunt that really doesn’t start until chapter 30. I hear the third book is more like the first which was an easier more straightforward read.

Historia
Bruno is a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life - living in his restored shepherd's cottage; patronizing the weekly market; sparring with, and basically ignoring, the European Union bureaucrats from Brussels. He has a gun but never wears it; he has the power to arrest but never uses it. But then the murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes everything and galvanizes Bruno's attention.

Magnificent
Revisado: 06-14-22
A beautiful setting, a very good plot based on history, interesting characters from the main ones to supporting all wound around an ethical conundrum. Read by one of my favorite actors who brings the same sensitivity to this as he does to the Bertie series. So glad this is book 1 so many more to go.

Con games
Revisado: 07-25-18
Stories involving the con game seem hard to come by.
This one creeps up on you and then gets nicely complex, still very upbeat with a lot of wry humor.
The narrator was excellent and the changes were flawless, the pace just right, and absent the excessive over acting of some other narrators.

Almost
Revisado: 03-23-18
Like many serial heroes eventually it seems the pressure to produce another hit ( I’m assuming this as a reader without experience as a writer) becomes the basis for the book.
The hero is as good as always, the performance is outstanding, Ray Porter, is Logan.
The location also is interesting as is much of the ancillary fill that makes this series a good read.
Again there is a fair amount of wise guy humor that as is has throughout the series adds nicely to the read.
SPOILER ALERT—
The denouement is contrived and strained, resorting to an amateurish formula.
Very disappointing.
Though except for that contrivance the book is as good as the previous in the series and worth the read, though you will perhaps as I did, give a loud “Oh come on”.
