Dorset is the latest setting for the talents of Inspector Ian Rutledge, a veteran of the First World War still haunted, literally, by his actions. Indeed, his personal ghost only serves to complicate things as his inner doubts blend into the trauma of the case.

Hamish spoiled an otherwise okay story
Revisado: 12-19-22
In Book 1 we are introduced to Hamish.
Inspector Rutledge is a WW1 survivor who is dealing with his war experiences at the same time as resuming his Detective duties.
During the war he had occasion to court martial a Corporal (Hamish) for cowardice. Despite giving Hamish a number of opportunities to take his men "over the top" of the trenches, he chooses instead to face a firing squad. The execution fails to kill him and Rutledge has the unenviable task of finishing him off.
Enter Hamish as the Scottish voiced "ghost in his head".
At first this seemed reasonable, a voice that would seek to undermine Rutledge's confidence and throw doubt into his mind.
However, now that I am in book 3 it has become increasingly apparent that Hamish has now become far more than just an occasional voice in Rutledge's head. He is now offering suggestions for solving the crimes, analysis of the suspects and almost a de-facto partner for Rutledge.
I'm afraid it has just become so unlikely as to be quite annoying, especially given that Hamish has had no Police training of any sort. I'm sorry Charles but this book will be my last of yours. Sam Gillies narration is good!

But, when one of their colleagues is shot dead on her own doorstep and the brass think it’s an inside job, Ryan finds himself drafted in to investigate. He’s barely scratched the surface when reports flood in of a terror explosion at Durham Cathedral. Chaos descends on the sleepy, historic city and, when the smoke clears, they find a priceless artefact that once belonged to Saint Cuthbert is missing.

Where is Part 2?
Revisado: 01-25-21
Without researching whether there is a second book to continue the story, I can only register some frustration at the short length of this book and the lack of a conclusion.
I don’t generally purchase books with a duration less than 8 hours because I tend to finish them in a few days!
This was an exception because the Author’s other DC Ryan stories have been excellent and the Narrator is one of my favourites.
If there is more to the story, then I would have preferred a longer book. Most of LJ Ross’ books are around the 8 to 9 hour mark.

Very disappointing!
Revisado: 12-02-18
As a dedicated Reacher follower, I was really surprised to find a book that I didn't enjoy. The storyline was weak and full of padding which added nothing to the plot.
It felt like the book had been put together because it was expected by Reacher devotees.
Even Jeff Harding's unique narration style, which I normally enjoy, seemed to grate a bit.
The constant short staccato sentences ending in the same tone began to become annoying. It is obvious that Jeff has matched his delivery to the punchy short sentence style that Lee Child uses.
In this book there seemed to be an overuse of the descriptive style that Lee employs.
I will buy the next book in the hope that this one was just an aberration.

Excellent suspense masterfully delivered!
Revisado: 07-19-18
I had never heard of the Authors but settled on the book because the Narrator is a favourite of mine.
His delivery was up to his usual high standard and he conveyed the overall sense of suspense perfectly.
The suspense built steadily and the main character was as enigmatic at the end as he was in the beginning.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book and I would highly recommend it.

Narrator ruined this one for me
Revisado: 06-08-17
The unfortunate part of finding a really good Narrator (George Guidall), is that others simply don't bring the story to life in the same way.
I couldn't continue this book after listening to the first two chapters.

Revisado: 05-17-17

Jonathan Keeble's mastery of the diverse accents in this book made the experience so much more enjoyable.

An interminable chase!
Revisado: 05-01-17
I did stick it out to the end but it was tough going.
I found the plot rather poor and the unlikely escapes from a variety of predicaments too far fetched for the story to be credible.
Some of the conversations used language which didn't seem to suit the characters and the whole thing seemed to drag on!
I wouldn't recommend the Author and won't be listening to any other titles of his.

A Fascinating series, well told.
Revisado: 05-01-17
I had previously been put off trying any of the Author's books because of his misdemeanors but I am glad that I was sensible enough to realise that his literary skills had nothing to do with his personal conduct.
This series proved totally engaging and I found myself scrambling to purchase additional credits in order to continue the story without interruption!
To put together a tale that spans a lifetime is a creditable feat.
To make it so engrossing deserves high praise indeed.
I found myself totally immersed in the story line and experienced a range of emotions which mirrored those of the characters.
If you haven't tried Mr Archer's books, then I can't think of a better introduction!
