just too many problems to be fun.
Revisado: 12-28-24
stupid premise overall. Author also has very poor understanding of the absolutely immense time span that he is dealing with. He also tries too hard to be funny and he isn't. After a while it just doesn't work anymore. I just couldn't finish it.

Imagine a London where magic is real...real, but feared. This is Eliza Braxton's London, and she has always accepted her place in it gladly. As one of the Riftborn, her magic has relegated her to the servant class, where she dutifully serves as the lady's maid in one of the most powerful households in the country. There, she uses her remarkable powers of persuasion to keep Elder Hallewell's rebellious daughter in the path to an arranged match of power and prosperity. Eliza has never questioned her loyalty...until now.

Sloooowly it goes
Revisado: 11-13-23
The narrator has a delicate proper voice that doesn’t quite fit all the range needed to move the story along. It is an excellent voice for jessamine or a fine lady, but as a narrator it seems overly prim and cold.
Story then felt like it moved too slowly; I tried reading the book at the same time as listening and it was painful to wait for each page to be narrated so I could turn the physical page too.

Historia
Leaving my husband was hard. Trying to face the world alone with my teenage daughter is the sort of thing nightmares are made of, but I caught a break. My best friend just hired me for a great job, with perks like a rent-free house right beside not just one handsome man, but five! Each one is hotter than the last, and all of them seem interested in me. But everyone around us has these strange golden eyes...and there are the questions no one will answer. And who cares if there's a lot of wildlife running around at night? I do, especially when a wolf keeps sneaking into my backyard.

I want the rest of the story
Revisado: 10-14-19
I was a bit disappointed that the six books did not come to a more complete resolution. Clearly these are only the first six books in an ongoing saga. The author makes very little attempt to wrap up or package each book as a separate part of the story.
The story started off with too much combat as far as I was concerned. sometimes when major problems go on and on and on it can become overwhelming. however after a while the characters in the story started to take over and become more important. there were some interesting and worthwhile characters here.

Audio track from a video
Revisado: 08-07-19
When I listened to this, it became obvious that it is just the audio track from a video, yet I didn't see anything like that listed by Audible, for tis. True, it didn't cost me anything, but I'm not sure I would have downloaded it if I had known.
The first 'chapter' wasn't bad. Was more interesting than some of the later chapters. Overall, I think it was worthwhile, but I just think it could have been done better.

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Excellent beginning to a New Series
Revisado: 07-13-19
This book is the beginning story of a new series. It was fascinating and you really cared about the main characters, working with them as they solved the problems created for them by a worldwide disaster. It was plausible, believable, a complete story on its own, but clearly it sets the stage for so much more.
There is a new universe waiting out there, but the background does not overwhelm. The story remains very focussed, human, and personal. The problems they face, even including their own survival, seem so small next to the great disaster that has fallen upon them, but you care very much about them, and can't wait to see how they handle each new problem.
I love the balance that the author brings to this story. I love 'alternate universe' stories and hate 'disaster' stories, and was glad when the disaster became just another problem to be solved, something that created important conditions and restrictions, but not something that was explored as being important in and of itself. What matters the whole way through is the core people we follow, and in the end we cheer as they rise to new challenges.

Not quite what I expected going in
Revisado: 07-02-19
I will admit that going in, and based on his other books, I expected this to be a story about a guy who comes into contact with some alien tech, and then goes out and does some amazing things. But that wasn't quite right. This book just wasn't quite 'there' for me.
In essence, this entire book is just one long First Contact story. Some surprising things happen. There are a few twists and turns. The alien tech is, as expected, beyond anything we can really understand. The characters are well done and believable and we care about them. But I expected the First Contact to just be the beginning and then for the main character to go out and use the tech and triumph over all. The trouble was that the story just didn't get that 'big.' In the end it was 'adequate' but not really anything special, and that is why I gave it 4 stars. If I had known exactly what it was about before I bought it, I probably wouldn't have bothered.
